Daft question but have you got a wet drivers footwell carpet (heater matrix o-rings)? Mine were leaking and had to top up once every few weeks.Bugger to get to but a heck of a lot cheaper than an engine rebuild.

Wow, that is spooky. I have exactly that and only noticed it yesterday. If the misfire turns out to be a duff plug and the water loss due to that I'll be a very happy bunny... Thank very, very much. I'll check the condenser drains too.

It pays to examine all simple eventuality before deciding the most expensive fix is the best. Always put your dick away properly before zipping your fly up. :D:D:D

If a car is really essential to you, perhaps you should consider picking up something cheap to run and reliable as a second vehicle. I know I reckon my old Peugeot 106 costs almost nothing to run, as it is so much cheaper on fuel than thebRangie.

+1....

Yes I have 2 Range Rovers...but we also have a Fiat 500 in the garage for those inevitable times....I may be a Range Rover addict, but I also know their record for unreliability!

Look at something of the style of a Suzuki Wagon R. Should be available chaepish now, and my neighbour, who used to be trade, loves his (also has a Ferrari)

All hoses bulging and oozing coolant. Looks like a dropped liner after all. Gutted. Wagon-R it is then. Turner Engineering for the new engine?

You do like jumping to conclusions.
+1....get the block properly pressure tested before you scrap a potential good car!

The P38 I picked up the other week was destined for the scrappy if it wasn't sold just because it has a few maladies....chiefly an oil leak which I am attending to, and other than that, it ain't a bad car...just a little rough around the edges which is perfect for what I want it for!

Not my conclusion, garage said it. It's done 109k which is about right for it to be worn out, yes? Misfire at startup, coolant needs topping every few days, top hose looks like a python after lunch, minor hoses have needed the jubilee clips tightening for weeks now and a garage which specialises in Land Rovers (Finlandya Custom, Glastonbury) have given me a diagnosis which seems reasonable. The footwell leak was just after it had been washed so most likely not relevant though I'll still clear the condenser drains.

I'm not scrapping the car I'm trying to get recommendations for a well built replacement engine and Turner seem to have a good rep. RPi seem very good but too pricey... I'll probably get a Kent H180 cam for a little treat!

Dear me. Do you not think a full race engine would suit you better? :D:D:D

The H180 is a low end torque cam, I believe. Also I'm in touch with Derek Allfrey... He seems nice and still not VAT registered :)

I would have thought a snif test would be in order. Someone posted a few days back finding a company that did top hat blocks for less than £600.

He's mentioned on these forums quite a few times... none of it I saw was disrespectful. Been in the biz for decades... one guy mentions the t/h liner process id subbed out and costs £1,300. I'd post a link to his website (which looks professional BTW) but don't know if it's allowed. He doesn't pop up a bunch of complaints like you get if you Google "Heathrow Engine Centre".

I'm in a quandary now... people thought £4,250 is too steep (That's a Turner short engine at £2,700 plus fitting and VAT).

This guy is saying £2,900 to "Take 4.6 engine out rebuild with new top hat liners new cam, lifters bearings, polished crank, oil pump, heads crack tested with valves machined and re-seated. All new hoses not silicone refit and test run." He checks and reuses rods and pistons and the liner people crack test the block.

For fair comparison that would be about £3,500 if he had to charge VAT. Somewhere in that £750 difference between him and the "expensive" option is the right answer? I certainly smell something.
