Morning Chaps and chappessess,
Got a question for you all.
My 90 model classic has had a minor electrical fault since before I brought it, but now it is beginning to annoy me. Every now and then the rev counter stops working. It doesnt just die though, it flickers between doing nothing and working. Looks like it is trying to dance at times.
In adition to this, the heater blower slows down, the engine loses some power and all lights dim slightly.
Now I assume this is an earth fault. If so which one. I know there are point in the engine bay and under both front seats. Are there any behind the dashboard I need to check?
Also, could it be linked to the coil arcing out from the HT output to the neg connection? Which it does from time to time.
Any thoughts on this would be gratefully taken on.

I will be taking the RRC off the road shortly for a chassis recon at the end of the month anyway, so doing the stuff isnt a problem

If rev counter, lights, & heater all fade at same time then surely they are all suffering same supply problem? Could be bad earth from battery to body?? If engine doesn`t misfire at same time then this shows earth to block is ok? I think above logical but any corrections accepted. It is often best to unbolt earth straps/cables and clean them as a visual inspection ain`t enough.

If I remember correctly, the tacho. is driven from an output on the alternator, check the connections are clean and secure. If it is still the same, get the alternator checked out by a GOOD Auto Electrical company.......not a bad thing anyway, with the Autumn/Winter almost on us.

Chassis recon mate, your brave!

I just drill-wire brushed all mine and coated it with epoxy, ****ty job but now its done and undersealed it looks like a normal car underneath insted of a rusty pile of crap lol

Lol. Don't know if I'm brave or just plain mental.
Shouldn't be too hard though. Apart from getting the body off. And most of the body to chassis bolts were changed last november when I did some extensive body repairs.

Yeah how are you going to do that, hoist?

In did wonder about doing that for mine but I wasnt sure how much there was to diconnect.

How long do you think it will take?

To be honest I have no idea how long it is going to take me.
As for what needs to be removed? Well, there are fuel lines, brake pipes, electrics, water pipes, Auto gear linkage, gas system, rad. Basically everything that is linked to body and chassis.
At a guess, I would estimate a day or 2 to get the body off. Depending on seized brake unions/connections, etc. Going to leave the engine, gearbox and transfer box in place, and remove after the body is out of the way. Going to allow a month to do it all though, just to be on the safe side. Wanting to clean up the axles, props, crossmembers (well putting in a new rear crossmember as it is erm.... whats the word......... buggered.)
It has already had, new discs and pads all round, (needs new cover plates though) new shox and springs all round, complete poly bush kit, new full stainless exhaust (Double S bag of ****e) new inner and outer sills both sides, front inner arches both sides, repaired read arches both sides, repaired bulk heads both sides, new abs pump and new headlights.

Wow , the whole nine yards, I did as much of that as I could with it up on blocks and with the body still attached.

I have done:make and fit new boot floor , replace fuel tank, patch front and rear inner wings(alot), patch (probably 30% new) o/s sill, rebuild base of B and base and top of A pillar, new bonnet , new headlights, fix rear heated screen, clean off, epoxy, underseal whole bottom of body/chassis, take off clean out and refit sump and rocker covers, replace brake pipes, all fluids and service items now I am in the depths of sorting and autobox problem caused by the fluid change, and fixing a leak on the AC.

If you havent changed your fluid I would leave it well alone!

I do wonder why we bother though as they will only be worth the same as when we started!
