fitted new carb to the series 3 a little while ago and i now get about 12 to the gallon ,this does seem a bit low to me what are you lot getting out of your 2.25 petrol
 
I get between 19 and 21 with an overdrive, rover diffs, rebuilt engine and a carefully tweaked Weber 32/34 carb. Before that I got between 14 and 17 with a Weber ICH.

I found driving with a vacuum guages off the manifold for a while taught me to be more careful with my right foot. Avoid braking and accelerating unnecessarily, leave room (lots) in front of you and drift along. If you want to speed up do it as quickly as possible.

What carb did you fit? Is it a LWB or a SWB? Do you have an overdrive?

I once ran a 109 petrol that would do around 110 miles on 8 gallons. Quickly sold it on and bought a diesel. Noisey and slow but around 25 mpg. Then a V8 for a few years really nice smooth or what? 15/ 20 mpg if on a reasonable run Now back to a series 3 2,25 diesel averaging 26/27 mpg.I am reluctant to go 200 tdi in case it shags the gearbox. I tried rangie 3.54 diffs in the S3 diesel but they ruined the driveability and no gain in mpg running round in third gear a lot to compensate for the taller gearing.
 
Yes, I'd not go for RR diffs unless you have a properly sorted engine. Before I'd put the higher torque cams/9:1 head on mine it was pertty hopeless now it is spot on.

As I've said before getting hold of a wideband Lambda sensor and tuning your carbs is a worthwhile exercis or at least was for me....got more mpg without losing any top-end poke by swapping a couple of jets.

The ECU on a series wont handle wideband lamba sensor, it messes the ABS up and kills the traction control module:)
 
its an 88 series and the carb was one of the cheap ones off ebay so i cant expect too much but i wondered if the mph i was getting was about right .obviously not then would be the answer.
admittedly i do have a bit of a heavy foot and i think it needs a bit more tweeking,thanks for the info
 
Weber, Zenith, Solex...can't help much without knowing the carb. Also if its not specifically for a Land Rover it could well have the wrong jets fitted.

Getting Carbs right requires a lot of patience and quite a bit of reading and forking out for decent stuff....worth it in the end though, reckon I've saved about £500 at least in the past six months...if you're not doing a lot of miles and it runs right then maybe not.
 
Running on oval-shaped mud terrains at low pressure with front diff engaged will shaft your mpg whatever you have. I'm too scared to test mine but it is doing more than 12 for sure. Maybe like 13 or something:rolleyes:
 
I still haven't worked out a way to get my mpg yet. Fuel tank leaks if I brim it and the speedo doesn't work...

I could run the tank empty then put in a certain amount and run it empty again but it would be a bit of a faff.
 
its not a webber carb its a zenith and it was sold to me on net as a landy one so i assume it has been correctly jetted, i set up timing with a strobe and idle to 750 then wound out mix screw 2.5 turns from in . i have found however that winding in or out half a turn makes little difference to the sound of engine any more than that and it starts to splutter
 
by the way i am using 50/50 tyres and do regularly check pressures to 29 .the worst part is i cant let the tank run down to 1/3 full as the pick up is short and i run out of fuel ,they are such a small tank that i do 60 miles and have to fill up again ,about £35
