Mig welder

hi all figure you lot might have an idea or at least an opinion on what kind of mig welder i should / could get for around £300 , got myself a fair bit of welding to do on my recently stripped 110 chassis and a touch on my bulk head.

Not trying to send you away from LZ or anything, but there are quite a few welding forums that may have a good idea about what's available these days. And whats good and whats not.

You should consider whether you're going to set up a gas account or use those little disposable bottles. If you've got a lot to do, it might work out cheaper to get an account. I think Screwfix are good for welding wire.

Put more money with it and get a good one not a dime store cheap one. You get what you pay for.:beer2:

Hows the quality of the machine can it weld 3/8 plate in a single pass?:beer2:

what part of your land rover is 3/8" plate ?

i have a clarke 151T from machine mart - about 270 RRP - copes well for my DIY welding and i can get a reasonable finish and have solid joints

im getting my new one there next month , dont need to spend 1k on a machine that is not used to often , they sell alot of clarkes from what i read there pretty good and spares everywhere

It would be built better,and take the beating that most diy with out experience do to things. Also if he wanted to sell later it would be easier to sell. :boink:

I use a clarke 151T fairly often, never had a problem on landy bits and i'm not a great welder...
it does 4.5mm steel and penetrates well

had good experiences with sealey welders, they are expensive but always on offer for good prices in the sale catalogue.

overspecing does not always mean better.

everyones context of better is different - your in it for the resale value. im in it for the "get the job done cheaper than getting someone to do the job for me - looked at reviews its not a pile of ****e thatll do me"

you dont need to spend 1000 quid on your first welder - you might hate welding ......

Correct, but you don't want to be defeated before you start with a cheap piece of ****:boink:

Thinking at going for a clarke 151TE or a clarke 150TE from machine mart got one close by and one close to work so if i have n e problems with the machine i can take it back , fingers crossed it should do the job as i have a defender 110 chassis to weld up ( rear crossmember , bulkhead outriggers , and a couple of patches on the rear tub out riggers ) lol will know more when its back from the shot blasters, also got a little to do on the second hand bulkhead to do before it goes for galv.

first landrover by the way fun fun fun lol 3 months driving and im now rebuilding it lol will get some pics posted once im a bit further on only got as far as stripping it so far

get a good used one like a murex or summit , try and get an ex trade one or a deal. te cheaper ones from screwfix etc are ****e. avoid the gasless ones as they are utter bollix.

those lil disposable bottles are ****e too, wont even fit on a real welder lol.

look at it as an investment as the money you save at mot time on your landy over the years will pay for it and the quality of the welds will make it last.

hopeing the investment in the galvanising after its welded up will pay for itself at mot time every year lol

Got the Clark 135 my self and cant fault it this replaiced a clark mini mig that I had for 20 years and did loads of welding with.For anything thicker I have an arc welder that I have had for 30 years.As has been said get your self a large bottle of gas.

I picked up a mighty mig 130 off ebay, spares or repair for £12.50 as wire wouldn't feed. Fitted new wire as rust causing it to slip, new tip and shroud and she's like new. All i've gotta do now is learn how to fookin weld!

One of my colleagues at work picked up a Clarke 175T for £24. wire feed was too fast and controller had no effect. I told him to whip out the PCB and lemme have a look at it. One of the two 24v Zener Diodes had gone short circuit, a replacement from Maplin in Dundee cost him 24p (I didn't have any of that voltage.) Sound as a pound now, he's a happy bunny.

Snap-on Minimig 180c... got it for free off my uncle, needed a new torch so got a euro torch adaptor kit for about £25 complete with a torch and a load of tips.. oh and having to get gas.. money well spent to get it going... even a monkey like me can use it

if we are talking welder bargains I got my murex autolynx 161 for £100 will a free full large gas bottle, spool of wire and a shed load of tips
