Michelin Synchrone wanted

Anyone got a Michelin Synchrone 225x55x17 for sale with either 5mm or 8mm of tread?

Welcome to the forum. I can't help you with your search, but in case you don't know you want to be careful mixing old tyres on your freebie. Ideally you should replace them all new at the same time or you will put extra stress on your transmission, see the VCU sticky for more info.

The position is that I have done 40k from new. The four tyres have 5/6mm of tread left on them. I haven't swopped any tyres around as Land Rover advise so the spare is new (8mm of tread). The front nearside tyre has cracks in it beyond use and of course I can't use the spare or mix any other makes including the new Michelin.

To replace all five tyres is well expensive and extravagent when the tyres have loads of miles left in them.

The answer appears to be to get a decent Michelin Synchrone to match the spare and put these as a pair on the rear or alternatively, a part-worn Sychrone to match the wear on the three tyres which are in use. Does this make sense?

Which leads me to another question on how do you use the spare wheel if you have to????

I think the idea is that you would put the spare on and get the other tyre fixed ASAP. It might be ok to use the new tyre in conjunction with another new tyre on the back. As far as I know, it's ok to have the back tyres a little larger dia than the front ones. It's only when the back tyres are smaller than the front that it becomes a real issue for the VCU.

Dont dismiss the advice given , 4 new tyres are cheaper than a new IRD ,VCU and FINAL DRIVE UNIT !

Also, if one tyre is wearing prematurely then perhaps you have an imbalance of some kind or misalignment - if there is anything it would be good to correct it.

i would buy a new tyre for the damaged one and use the new tyre and the spare with 8mm on the back if it were me....only my views though

Shame i have a brand new spare but its 215/55/16, i will be in the same boat soon having to buy four new tyres as i think they don't make them no more.

That's pretty near correct - that's why I have a spare pair of Synchrones 'left over' for sale.

If the tyre circumference varies too much you put extra stress on the VCU - lots about that on here.

There can be big differences between manufactures - even for the same nominal size. As far as I understand it Michelin have really mucked up a load of folks by saying that their new Latitude 225/55 17 is not a match / direct size replacement for the Synchrone of the same dimensions which is not available any more.

I run 2 sets of wheels - for Summer and Winter - and I decided to standardise them with one manufacturer and one size - I chose Continental for both sets so I wouldn't have bother with the spare.

So I now have 8 Continental 235/55 17s - and 2 Synchrone 225/55 17s for sale.
