Message Display ageing

The message display on my 97 P38 is showing signs of age. At night the background is no longer black, but becoming brighter green by the month. I assume this the the LCD getting old. I haven't removed the instrument cluster recently and can't remember the configuration, and before I do I wondered if this may be a component swap or if the LCD display is integral to the cluster and the whole thing needs to be replaced.
