Hi all,, I started, or tried to start, my new acquisition (RR Classic with Mazda 3.5 diesel conversion) this morning. After picking her up thurs night she's stood untouched. Anyway, this morning I turned on the ignition and noticed that the glowcoil warning light wasnt on. (cant remember seeing one when i test drove her coz the owner had started the engine during the viewing!) I then tried to start the engine. It tried to fire but cut out immediately. I tried several times and eventualy the engine ran from one pot to all four. also chucking out loads of grey and blue smoke!. The RRC then drove ok all day.

I'll test the glowplugs later this week but without a workshop manual i'm not sure if its a fuse thats gone or something else..??... If i need coils any idea where I can purchase them please?

We have the very same engine in a Range Rover.
It's a turbo and we have owned it for four years.
The glow plugs are not wired up and it has all ways started.
When its really cold it smokes and is a bit slow to get going but soon clears it throat and is fine.
Yours might just need using a bit.

Anyway an update for this morning. After yesterdays flying up and down the A1M the engine started 1st turn this morning, BUT, wouldnt idle if i removed my foot off the pedal.. The engine felt very weak, as if it was running on 2 or 3 pots. Also was rough/misfire. Then after 1 min the engine then appeared to clear, run smoother and would then tickover with using any throttle pedal. There was still the cloud of blue/grey smoke plum from the exhaust.. Thanks for the advise on the pre heat, i'll have a look for it when the weather warms up..lol... on another forum I've been advised that the Mazda doesnt have and glowcoils! but a heater coil set into the manifold.. Has yours? cheers again....

A heater in the inlet manifold, no glow plugs I think.
In the morning you have to give it some throttle and rev it up until the viscous fan free wheels and then it will idle.
If you start with out clearing its throat it will not idle or if it does it makes the hole car vibrate like mad.
The knack is to give it plenty until it will idle smoothly.

Thanks Spencer,, spot on.. The engine has started fine the last 2 mornings. I give the throttle a tiny bit and it starts fine and revs to 1100 rpm,, takes 15 secs to clear and ready to drive..cheers

Happy to be of some help.
One other thing you might need to know if you ever have any fuel problems is that there is a small filter in the banjo bolt that is screwed in to the primer pump on the injector pump.
This can get blocked causing fuel starvation and it took me ages to find the problem.
You would never know it was there.

Merry Christmas

Thanks Spencer,, and a merry xmas to you... Would you have a list of service items for the Mazda? ie... oil and air filters (large drum air filter) aux belts etc? Make and part numbers...Thanks... Rick

You can get bits from a company called MD engineering but they are very expensive.
I just read the part numbers off the old filters and got them from any motor factors.
The first time we replaced the air filter I told the motor factors it was a range rover classic fitted with the mazda 3.5 slt engine and it was listed in there filter book as being a recognized conversion and so they had a part number and could get the filter.
Oil, fuel and air filers all can be bought from any factors.
As for the belts we have only had to replace the power steering belt and MD engineering wanted with postage about £25 so I took the old one of and went to a belt and bearing stockist and they measured it and supplied a new belt for £9.
Cheers
