I'm trying to move away from organised 'adventure days' and try to do more of my own stuff. I've a few friends that guide me on the odd trip but I'd really like to be able to record the trip on some form of sat nav so I can do the journey again on my own or with different groups.

Can anyone recommend a good unit that will do this and record a large number of routes?

your opening a very wide subject there.......

I use a PDA with memory map on and OS maps, just depends on waht you want how much you want to spend, and what you want to do with it..

Have you searched, there is loads of threads on this subject.

I did a quick search but maybe used the wrong criteria.

I want something like a Tomtom in design and use but maybe bigger screen and more terrain info. With these things I always start with whats the best that everyone uses and if its silly money I start scaling down. I'll spend a few hundred for the right kit!

As big stu said, thats a really big topic there. Most people use a laptop with memory map on it with an external GPS.

Chris C above ^^^ uses a tablet, but essentially its the same thing.

Im having issues with mine but, thats because i need an earlier version of windows to run my version of memory map. But ive seen a few setups now and its remarkably easy to setup and get running.

you can use a garmin GPS thing aswell but the screen is obviously quite a bit smaller.

Memory map have a forum aswell so you can ask on there for any advice from people and there quite helpful.

I've put memory map on my iphone for a look but not that impressed. It is a free version so perhaps it has features cut out. I didn't fancy the idea of a laptop jumping around the cab. I had it in mind that one of the big sat nav names might do something specific that's rugged and can be locked down.

I have a lil netbook attached by one of these.

RAM Mount UK

It dosent move an inch. And ive done some pretty rough lanes.

Just surprised there isn't a dedicated tomtom like device that does this! Maybe I
Need to look into it but there's something about having a laptop in a computer that feels all wrong!!

something like this works for mehttp://s1215.photobucket.com/albums/cc510/EssexMudMonkeys/Drizz%20Wales%20Photos/?action=view&current=IMG_3973.jpg

I use paper OS maps, and enter the OS grid ref in to a Garmin 550, and keep a hard copy of all grid refs.
