Map confusion/TOM TOM maps

Ok, this will be easy i bet but as usualy i'm confused.

I've bought a Pink OS landranger map for around sheffield area, can find a couple of lanes, BUT, i can't see anything else, i'm only lookin for boats, suppose i should be looking for somethin else too maybe??

But, i was thinking, i downloaded those maps for the tom tom's, all loaded up fine, but theres loads more, everywhere, i know some are just multiple points of starting to the lanes. but there still seems alot (for example, was looking at an OS landranger map for south pennines, couldnt see anything, sat nav has afew.

Am i looking at the wrong maps? Would the Orange ones be better? Maybe in more detail, being a higher scale, and therefore show more lanes/byways, etc etc?
(and so i've wasted £7 on a map of no where near where i live that i'll never use!)

ya should be looking fer ++++++ or OOOOOOOOOO (but solid) colored green if it's a 1:25000 map and red if it's a 1:50000 map Me minds gone blank and I can't remember the scale of the pink maps. Also thin double white lines are narrow roads and tracks some will be tarmacced some won't. some'll be public some won't which is why yer need to look at the definitive maps at the council offices.

na, your better of with the 1:50,000 for laning as you get a larger covered area. the 1:25,000 scale explorers are designed primarily for hiking, biking etc, where you need the clarity and lets face it, not going to be covering such a large area. thats why there are specialist explorer maps for snowdon, the lakes, brecon beacons etc.

there are other rights of way you can use besides BOATS but the laws are unclear and each lane may be of diff status. thats why its easier to stick to BOATs because atleast then you know hwere you stand! thats assuming there isnt a TRO notice on the lane, which should be sign posted at each end anyway.

which number Landranger is it? i will have a look on memory map.

as a note, always check the amount of lanes on a map before parting with you $$$

ive got loads of lanes marked up southwest of sheffield. explorer maps 001 and 024

The solid OOOOOOO's are "Other route with public access" but still can't see many of them.

So what, you go down to the council office with your own map and a highlighter? Sounds like fun.

Red, or pink, which ever, its 1:50000 scale.

Oh and its Landranger Map 110 (pink ones, which colour do you use?)

i got it, cos we wanted to explore the Houndkirk road, next to Lady cannings plantation, we saw it featured in LRO mag and though good one to try out. Other than the local trail type thing at Horwich, but not sure what thas definded as but we've seen other landys there.

It is fun trying to look at the maps in waterstones and whsmiths trying to look for lanes.

Think i need to organize a holiday to the Isle of Man, theres LOADS there

Think you need a permit, plus do anything wrong there and they beat you with whips

we go to north wales all the time but more to climb The Great Orme at Llandudno. We've looked at the OS Landranger maps for north wales, and we only found around 7 or 8. Probs just us being blind

FFS Paper maps is so yesterday get yersen a copy of memorymap and start using digital mapping. the futures bright the futures memorymap

I'm at the centre of my uiniverse where abouts did you want a route of and is it just a route or do you want a map as well

do a search but basically it's a program that uses digital versions of OS maps and displays them on a laptop / PC or handheld PDA. linked to a GPS receiver.

well i have a laptop, what kinda gps receiver?

You can either buy a garmin or similar handheld GPS unit or (easier) a bluetooth gps and a bluetooth dongle for the laptop.

ow dear, here we go again have a search about memery map etc. on here. its been covered. you can get GPS recievers for USB ports and run everything through memory map on your laptop when out laning.

Ooh yes please always collecting over lays you never know when you might be in the area and fancy a bit of offroading.

anyone got a good memory map of exmoor?
