Took the heads off my P38 thor engine this weekend. What a strip down. I'm sure its not much more effort to hoist the engine out.
Anyway after the nightmare of getting those bolts off the heat sheilds and the exhaust manifold bolts I managed to take the heads off. The pasenger head had very tight bolts on the outer edges and not upto spec on the inside. I hade a 600mm breaker bar and 16mm 6pt deep impact socket (purchased these on your advise) which the job cannot be done without. The gasket on this side was starting to leak on number 6 and 7 cylinders, so a new gasket was needed. cleaned the head up. No signs of steam cleaning in the cylinders and no leaking from the water ports.
The drivers side head was more major. The head bolts were tight on and needed that breaker bar.
Major hole in the side of the gasket in bores 4 (must be the misfire on startup which sealed when warmer) and signs of giving way in a couple more . Again no steam cleaning and no leaking from water ports.
Only retightened the bolts on one head and that was a bit of a fright.
Did the torque of 20 Nm then the 90 deg turn then another 90. The first 90 was no sweat, but I thought the breaker bar was going to snap for the second load. Anyone else found this ?
Before replacing the water pump I will give the whole system a good flush to see if that improves flow around the heater hoses (LPG T'd off this for 2 vapourisers)
Anyway thanks to all that helped me and the advise.
