Hello everyone
This is more food for thought
But I found a 4.0 V8 manual gear box online, just wondering wether anyone has ever Manual swapped an auto P38 4.0 ?

And any idea of what's involved?

Cheers

I would imagine all the bits are available for the mechanical side of the change. The diesel came with a manual box so all bits to take the R380 in the P38 are available.
Not sure how much of an electrical/electronic nightmare it maybe.
But I would have to say very doable with patience and time for sure.

Uness you are getting somebody else to do it then it could get costly.

Why?

+1 on Why ?

A few guesses:
- BECM (& possibly engine ECU) will require settings changed.
- Modified wiring for Reverse & Neutral switches.
- Bell housing & Clutch bits, plus clutch master ?
- Replacement pedal assembly ?

Again why ?

I just prefer manuals and wanted to know wether it's something an amateur could do themselves.

If you need something to do I am sure it is possible for a reasonably mechanical savvy person.

As said the electrics/electronics would probably be more of a challenge. But wiring diagrams are available so I dont see why not.
It was (the 4.0) fitted in the Disco as a manual so the settings to change should be available in the ECU and the BECM has a manual setting, if they work together is another thing. So that said do you have a Nanocom?

BECM & GEMS definitely have gearbox type setting. Can't find anything in Thor or EDC.

It’s not like a straight swap or for the feint of heart.
You don’t have a clutch pedal or associated requirements like master/slave cylinders, cooling for it, electrics all sorts of niggles before you even get to adapting a box to fit. That doesn’t mean it can’t be done just rather involved, and it won’t be drivable the whole time it takes.
One member even put a manual box in an L322 which he uses regularly so anything is possible if you are mad committed enough.

Have a good read through related historic posts in the searchbar while you ponder your possibilities. It’s been discussed previously and if you are serious about it there’s a lot of homework to do 👍

My P38 is the Thor engine so I imagen a discovery 2 box could fit?

And no I don't have a nano com just a icarsoft cr max
Nano com is just slightly above what I can afford.

If it comes out of a V8 it will mate up.
But........
You will need bits to beable to put the BW transfer box on as its not a direct swap. So do a bit of searching around.
But again as they fitted the manual in the Diesel P38 the bits are out there.
I can only say that it can be done in reverse as I am collecting bits myself to go from BW to LT.
But the output to go into the BW is different to the LT as the splines are different. So it could mean an output shaft change, I dont know.
Like I said all the bits are there its just hunting down the bits of the jigsaw :).

Dont forget you will need the flywheel end bits too.

Have a look around your icarsoft it may have the ability to change the settings.
If not then let peeps know where you are and somebody maybe close enough to pop round and help.

icarsoft CR Max does not do P38 settings. Their "coverage" says it does most of the ECU's but I have tried it, and it has limited coverage. It also identified the AT box as diesel, but gets the engine correct as GEMS !! Nothin else connects.

Same thing with my Delphi CDP.
