Making of a winch bumper

Started making a winch bumper today have added pics of the making to for any one who wants to know how its done.

start by taking off the bumper



once you have taken off the bumper make carboard templates for the brackets then draw this out on to sheet of metal





then you will need to cut them out. Cutting equipment used was oxygen and acetaline












after you have cut out your brackets you will need to tidy them with a grinder







once you have done this you will need to drill your holes for the fitment



then cut out your u shape for the tube bar to sit in



then put sit the bar in then get is square to where u want it then cut other end



once this is done weld the bar to the brackets



then once it is all done paint it



this is not finished yet have still got to put A bar on it next week run out of time today

His mate wasn't there today hogging the workshop so we got it started

Nice one. And I've been worried about cutting the mounting brackets off my bullbar to relocate them so I can get my steering guard fitted.

Looking really good. Have yu considered bending the ends in slightly to make it look a bit posher? But mainly so anything you hit is deflected towards the outer edges? makes it .0001% more pedestrian friendly anorl. If you int got a tube bender. cut a slot in the back of the tube and drive the disco very slowly into a wall or telephone pole, to bend it then weld the slot back up again.

if you are using the bumper mounting points usually the bull bars use the outside of the chassis and the steering guards use the inside so shouldn't need to make brackets just get longer bolts but if it does use inside then id bend the mounting points to the bul bars

They both use the inside. There is about 10mm each side that it needs to come in by, far to much to bend the brackets by.

I will get a cutting disc to the bracket, then have them rewelded in situ while a helper holds the other end of the bar in position.

we will be doing that next week as we run out of time today will also be rubbing it down an painting it properly as we just quickly painted over the rust today lol

Good start on that bird...

I'd recommend getting some cross bracing on your L shape brackets there, sure it's sturdy enough for straight loads such as winching but any sideways or torsional force put on it will be acting straight on the plates with no reinforcement.

Probably won't be a problem but might just be something you wanna think of while you've got the welder out. Plus those sharp right angles are gonna stick into the ground and severely reduce your approach angle on ruts and hills!

Other than that looks a solid well made bit of kit should do the job when it's done

looking good, i started one ages ago fer a mate of ours, never got chance to finish it , he's always too busy, ah might finish it me self and put it on fleabay ,

Too fooking late mate. Advice it's already been discussed and it's a work in progress reinforcing and trimming are stage 2
