Hey all, my Disco's front bumper is rusted through (surprised? no!), and I have been busily drooling over the nice ones for sale in different places. But can I legally make my own? Where does the law stand on this? I cant find anything much via google, and I'm itching to build something! Cheers all!:)

Dont see why not as long as you tell the insurance co and make sure it has no sharp edges or anything sticking out.
If in doubt check with your local tester as to what he would fail it on.

Yes you can make your own bumper discovery ones arnt strong anyways they bend and break at the sight oif summit hard. Like ruff said tell the insurance company that its non standard they will class it as a mod not a fix

OK, so I can get welding tomorrow, but are there specific laws about the size/projection/height from ground etc.? I heard (from a not so reliable source) that there is a law stating the top of the bumper has to be between certain distances from the road surface. I just don't want to go mental building some immense work of art, then pc plod telling me to scrap it.

im following this thread with interest as im toying with the idea of building a monster bumper for the front of me slitty eith a 6"x3" iron gurder i got behind me shed

Yeah I was thinking of big ar** girder to start from, maybe as a central section, with round bar either side to the wings, and an A bar for the spots, and, and, and, ok I'll calm down now, or I'll have the mig out, and the missus will NOT be impressed at this time of night!:)

Few planks of wood done with a few hashed nails will do nicely! I might try it but then again pain staking work removing limbs trapped on the nails

If you do make a bumper, I'd love to see it, put a few pics up if and when you do it :D

ive only got me eye on the girder as its a heavy bugger and can just weld anything i like to it such as a towing ball /couple of recovery eyes and maybee cut a slit in the centre for a rear mounted winch also sink a couple of spots into the flange on the girder with mesh grille covers looking nasty as summot from mad max but shiny

Well short of anyone saying "no you cant make one because.....", I will be making one within the next few weeks. I'll post some pics, maybe a step by step if anyone's interested that much?

here's a nice design for you :)

There are dimension rules on bumpers stick it where you want pointing how you like. The only thing you have to watch is sharp edges that people could get caught on should you plough into a few pedestrians :p

I've always fancied a front bumper made from a RSJ, six inches wider than the vehicle and sharpened to a point at the edges!:D Then I'd drive down motorways with roadworks, and wait for the cretins who refuse to leave the outside lane until the cones, and watch them try and cut me up. But it would be the side of their bodywork which gets cut. :):)

Oops, sorry, just been dreaming again.

Pics of any custom job would be great! I spent all of yesterday grinding, welding, and re-painting my rear bumper. Quite pleased with the welding. it was my first ever proper bit of welding, end now its painted, you can't see the fix! Well chuffed! Today I have started collecting materials for the front bumper build. I will keep you all posted on my progress, and post pics as and when!

Wow that looks good from what I can see. Just as a side Q, what colour is you disco? I know it sounds daft, but my disco is the same colour, and its bugging me cos I can't find the code for the colour anywhere. Cheers.:)
