Freelander 1 MAF Sensor, Recomendations.

Hello all.

I have know idea which are, or what is the best MAF sensor to fit,original or after market as mine has given up. I have cleaned it with break cleaner and have since found out that, that's what has completely killed it. So don't do it Pals.
What I need is a recommended replacement. I don't intend to get rid of the motor so want to fit one for good.
Any help welcome. Whether to fit original or after part.

The car seems to Black Smoke when revved, a worry at MOT time.

Bosch are the best MAF sensors and have a life of around 50K miles. MAF sensors age with use as the hot wire oxidizes over time. This reduces the wires current capacity, showing up as lower air flow at the EDC.
Normally a week MAF lowers fuel throughput, dropping off the power. If the inlet air temperature sensor part of the MAF is damaged, the EDC assumes a cold air supply, adding fuel to help smooth the running.

A new Bosch MAF will set you back anything from £149 to £169, on the R40 which is the same engine we found these to be spot on you just use the centre, do not buy a Bosch MAF without the body as it will be a copy,

You could run it without by unplugging the MAF until you get chance to replace it. also check the intercooler hoses if blowing black smoke,

There is black smoke when you initially rev the engine and it's slow on long hills, even if you floor it.
Arctic2, When you say 'just use the centre' do you mean just the MAF and not the body?

Hi Gary.
Yes if you purchase the Bosch MAF I have linked to you the MAF from it as the body is different than that of the TD4 but the MAF is the correct one, but is cheaper than if you purchased the Bosch one for the TD4, we did do some testing of after market MAFS and found one to be best of a bunch that fitted but again it only lasted about 12 14 months cost was £30 link below, I have nothing to do with this company etc.

It was found to be a worthy after market MAF compared to others that were tried, but in no way as good as the original Bosch item.

Just got to find a 5 pointed Torx driver/bit to get it out.

sorry to jump in , would that maf work on a defender or a disco? bought a couple of ebay after market but they dont work correctly under load only achieve a reading of around 200 to 300 but sit at 60 on tick over

The Freelander MAF will have a completely different calibration to a Defender or Disco. You'll need to find the correct MAF for it.
