Pretty much completely different in as much as the cylinder head and injection are different. M51 is electronically controlled mechanical injection, M57 is common rail electronic injection. Both designs well behind the market compared to other marques.

Thanks datatek

I like the bit that's states lack of use on low gears off roading leads to Failure so that's why they fail all 99.9 percent of them don't go off Tarmac .

As the saying goes use it or lose it , this accounts for what's in a mans trousers too.

There is a version of the 2993cc M57 the M57 D30 T2 that produces 286 bhp and 580 nm of torque. Wonder why they did not fit that one? :):)

Well its a version of the M57 - I don't know what they are trying to say grammatically by calling it a derivative which would imply it's a different type with historical connections - it's not - it's a M57. There might be some commonality between the M51 and M57 in terms of design ethics - but they are not the same engine. Why would BMW make a 2.5 M51 and M57 at the same time if they were the same engines?

Thats what I said..!!!

I didn't say the M51 and the M57 were the same....read back :D:D:D:D:D

The TD6 engine is an M57 that has been tweaked to perform at certain operating conditions....

I Quote from me:

Got the same Edition at home - will check....LRO are not known for their accuracy that is for sure!!

I am sure although they may share the same principles inherent to pretty much all BMW Diesels of the same era - they are different engines....

I know mate, I was complaining about the wording on the LRO article not your post! :D

I knew derivative was used in there somewhere! What derived from what though needs a little work! Cheers Ant for the article though.
