rears ? fit springs to shoes locate on bottom locator fit one shoe in cylinder then use a lever to pull other shoe out enough to fit on other side of cylinder

I did the fronts Easter weekend. Haynes suggested this:

1) Fit the retaining spring while the shoe is still loose
2) Fit the cylinder end of the shoe (i.e. top on the front facing shoe, bottom on the rear facing one)
3) Where the backing plate and the tang that goes into the non-cylinder end meet, place a large flat bladed screwdriver / chisel in the corner.
4) Push really, really hard

The tang should jump over the side of the groove that hold it and jump into place. Even though this way is counter intuitive as it looks as if moving the cylinder end would give more leverage - I found this way quite straight forward and went in a lot easier than I thought. So much easier in fact I slipped and whacked my face on the hub. I still have a black eye.

I put the spring on both the backplate and shoe, located the bottom of the shoe, then used a small ratchet strap around the top of the shoe(when I say top I mean the bit that touches the moving piston) and the other end of the strap around the outrigger for the rear of the 2 shoes and around the bumper for the other (that's on my late series 3 88 btw) hope the helps!

I had another tip from spitfiremk1 the other day. Instead of pushing with a screwdriver, use a large set of plumbers pliers or mole grips to grab the non-piston end of the shoe and lever it in that way. Less chance of slippage and black eyes.

I use a combination of mole grips and a long bar, pivot end in first then lever out with bar and guide home with grips. That found out after having to do the same job on my coach/motorhome which are very similar but a LOT bigger....took me three days of grazed knuckles and swearing the first time until an old-timer with arthritis came and showed me how in about 20 seconds!

When I was younger ( 17) and new to land rovers I bought a brake overhaul set from Britpart lol, put the fronts on a year or so ago, bloody hard work, I had to get some fence wire with a long bar with some of those spring pullers from Frosts and whilst I pulled the spring / shoe a friend had to try and push the shoe in line with the cylinder to get it to locate lol
