Hi folks, Happy New Year !
Sorry to be a pain ........BUT :D my 130k FreeLander has hit a recent annoying snag. It has started to idle erratically it bobs between 900-850rpm. Now I removed the EGR unit and cleaned it ( it was chock full of crap ) and cleaned the injector rail connector. However, it's still as bad ( although the initial puff of white smoke on start up has gone ) Can anyone offer any other checks I can to to hopefully rectify the problem? Cheers

A couple of doses of injector cleaner seemed to help mine a bit altho didnt stop it completely. Im planning to give my inlet pipework a good cleaning up sometime over tbe next few days so see how that goes. They are bad for fouling up with deposits because of egr.

The initial puffs of white smoke says unburnt fuel which may be low HP pump pressure. AFTER carrying out musky81 advice you may need to get a pressure check on the HP pump. Its simple if u can get your hands on a pressure guage and screw it into one of the injector delivery pipes. you need to have 360 bar whilst idling plus or minus 50 bar.

Thinking...If pressure on HP pump is within limits then it is remotely possible that the boost solenoid on the turbo is malfunctioning or else the linkage on the turbo is stuck. Get someone to start the engine whilst you lie under the car at the driver side front wheel and watch the turbo actuator arm. It should NOT move on idle. If your helper revs, then the actuator arm should move. However KISS principle prevails..its bound to be something simple...injectors worn or low common rail pressure.

Weather permitting ill be removing the EGR valve and the inlet manifold for a further De-coke. Is there and specific method for putting the manifold on? I.E torque settings or which bolts to tighten first?

Right, I've replaced the breather filter ( it looks like it was never replaced) manifold off decoked etc. Still lumpy ..... MAF sensor ??? Any other ideas !

Cheers

Replace the injectors.......

I'm about to do mine at 120,000. Just fitted new low pressure pump.

I also have been using Millers and 2 stroke oil together.

Would suggest doing a leak-off test first, it's cheaper than replacing the injectors and then finding they didn't need replacing.
I've also heard one of the four injectors is a pain to remove.

Have you checked your crank case breather?
