Hi, I am looking at changing the oils in my axles, gear box and transmission.

What is the best oils for these and where do you take your levels from?

Does anyone have any tips for accessing fill points?

Cheers Taz

For filling the axles and transmission a funnel with a piece of pipe attached to it is ideal, first open the filler points on your axles, trasfer box, gearbox, then open the drain plugs. (always open fillers first, incase you can't get them open once you've drained them!)

Once you are ready to fill them, get the required amount for the part your about to fill measured into a jug or something, then crawl under, put the pipe into the filler hole, and have someone pour the jugfull in to the funnel... Alternativly you can jam the funnel into something, pour in the oil then put a kink in it to allow you to craw under.

The oil for your diffs is hypoid gear oil - EP90 front takes about 1.70litres and the rear takes about 2.30litres.

Same stuff goes into the transfer box... about 2.80litres unless its the LT230T up to suffix D which only takes 2.30l, however I would just start with the 2.80 and if it starts ****ing out everywhere put a kink in the pipe and stop it.

The transmission takes ATF (automatic transmission fluid) people often make a mistake here and put in thicker stuff thinking it will quieten things down, this is a mistake because, the gearbox has its own circulation pump, which relys on a thin oil.

So ATF fluid for the gearbox... 2.67litres...

For topping up these parts I find that some EP90 or ATF in a oil can with a flexi spout is very effective.

And as mentioned above it is just to the top of the filler plug openings... however measure the oil into a jug and then you won't end up with a spray of oil all over the place when it fills.

Yeah wot Disco says.

You can top your gearbox up by poking a piece of tube, I used 1/4" bore, down the gear lever hole and into the filler hole and sticking a funnel on the end.

Cheers. :) will give it a go this weekend

I have a whining noise coming from the transmission when reversing, any ideas:confused:

It seems louder than the usual whining noise.

It whines more then the missus but less than the kids :D

By the way, when you do your lubricants at the weekend, there is no harm in parking at a slight angle, so you can get a little extra oil into the gear boxes, say just enough so that sitting on the flat its half way up the filler hole.
