Lube in my Hubs??

This seems a dumb question but I have to ask. When I reassemble my wheels I have lubricated the swivel housing. Nowhere in the docs does it tell me to lubricate the hub and with what. I presuming it must take something and sure gunk came out of them when I pulled them off but this no mention has made me want to check. Also, as it has no obvious filler plug I must also ask HOW I fill it if it does indeed need filling? Do I just whack some heavy grease in then assemble it? There is also the felt/rubber washer. Do I pack grease or put lube in behind this then place the washer in after it as a barrier? All a bit unsure and neither the Land Rover workshop manual or Haynes toilet paper clarifies it for me.

Oh, by the way, I am using MAP FWH in case it makes a difference.

"Pack the hub with fresh grease" - Land Rover manual says so. Castrol LM or similar. Pack the rollers with grease then add some grease and finish it off with some grease. I don't think you can have too much grease....

Thanks mate. I've obviously been staring at the manual so long today it's all just meaningless to me now.

I have a pot of thick orangey grease in a jar that my Dad had from working on the buses. I think it's for this kind of thing. Does it sound okay to use or do I need to be conscientious and go and get new stuff?

It's supposed to be a lithium based grease so it might be best getting new. These are your wheel bearings, after all.

Just buy some new mate, cheaper than new bearings !

series axles use oil to lubricate bearings ,which runs through stub axle ,thats why they have oil seal on hub and later vehicles have grease seal

Yet it still says in the book...... I'd rather have grease and oil than just oil alone.

oil has been more than fine on mine in fact some fit oil seal in later axles to let them run on oil,

I don't want my wheel bearings running dry if my rear diff oil level gets low - especially as the normal level is halfway up the axle case. Same goes for the front swivels. The hub seals keep the grease and/or oil in! (mostly)

.....and isn't the seal in the later stub axle between the hub and the ball preventing oil from getting to the hub bearings?

yes later vehicles run grease only or at least thats the aim,twin seals in hub allow oil to luibe drive flange splines ,and later 300 tdi on use seal in stub axle which lets drive member run dry a bit of a problem especially on td5s,im not saying you cant use grease just series run fine on oil and dont suffer with undue wheel brg trouble

Ah, well. I've always packed wheel bearings with grease and I'm not going to stop now!

I've also always been of the opinion that, without the extra stub axle seal (mine's an early S3) the grease slows down the passage of the oil onto the brake shoes......
