Afternoon all. I have a Defender 90 with the engine & 'box from a RR Classic fitted. Was like that when I bought it, all runs nicely although the gearbox is a bit noisy, and very low-geared........so........when I was offered another LT95 box with an overdrive fitted, for a good price, I thought "why not"?
Box was delivered to me yesterday. Wowzers that's a heavy lump! The shipping truck driver had a sheet for it on which it said they had weighed it (on a pallet) at 250kg!! Must admit I thought it was about half that.
So anyway. At some point soon I'm going to (have to!) carry out the swap. On the drive. Without a lift or anything fancy like that. So I've weighed up my options and I think they are as follows:
Option 1: remove from under the truck. Needs the big x-member removed, and the exhausts. May need to have the truck raised somewhat, and more importantly, even on a trolley jack, that is going to be very difficult to hoik about.
Option 2: Remove the seat box and floor, and lift it out from inside with an engine hoist. Not yet sure whether I can get it out between the two bulkheads, ie can I get it clear and lifted before I spin it 90 degrees to come out of the door?
Option 3: Remove the front panel then take the engine and box out as one complete lump. Swap the box over on the floor where I've got room to work, then replace as one lump.
Would appreciate thoughts on my plans and reports from anyone who's done this! At the moment I'm thinking that options 3 & 2, probably in that order, are favourite?
