I have a LT77 still in my motor with 300TDI fitted.

Thinking about a gearbox swap as its getting old and tired. Quite like the idea of a R380.

Am I correct to think that a stumpy R380 is a straight swap for the LT77? Do I need a different bell housing or can I keep what I currently have?

Thanks

I'm not sure if the tbox needs changing too. I'm sure I read somewhere a 77 is longer than a 380. I could be totally wrong however

Depends what chassis it is and what engine was fitted originally , I'm guessing that the 300tdi isn't the original engine as I believe that the r380 was already fitted to the 300tdi. I've done this on my 200tdi and you need the r380 stumpy but if the engine or gearbox mounts have been moved on yours then it could be either.

it is ,it is what it was built for when the r380 was introduced with the 300tdi,,its the bell housing and input shaft that are shorter than the defender lt77 as r380 box itself is a little longer

other way round , as reverse is the the rear extension housing as well as 5th like the lt77 the box is longer so to fit in a discovery the r380 was given a slightly shorter bell housing so it was then the same overall length of the lt77, when the 300 and r380 were fitted to defender the engine and transmission were moved forward 2 inches plus disco length r380 fitted, this is why defender 300 and td5 have same length prop as disco
