Just picked up my Defender, was really happy, but for some reason I now cant select reverse! It worked fine when i picked it up at midday and then again when I parked the car up at 3, but now nothing! :(

From various googling I think it might be the reverse selector or safety mechanism??

Can anyone give me some guidance on how to check this??

I'm a bit of a Defender noobie but I am used to getting my hands dirty so hopefuly i can solve the problem, with some guidance, please???

When you say no reverse do you mean the gear lever will not go over or it is not selecting. Are all forward gears working

if lever wont go across enough look at reverse plunger on drivers side of selector housing at bottom of gear stick ,removing center tunnel will give you access ,if lever wont go forward enough check reverse switch isnt wound too far in rear of selector housing ,removing center seat box cover will give access,if more than reverse are difficult remove gear stick turret and check yoke on top selector under turret is tight

I have just had fun investigating why reverse suddenly stopped working...
As mentioned i wound the two bolts on the reverse light switch and hey presto put it into reverse no problem. The activator plunging thingy had seized not allowing the lever to travel fully over. I wired in a reverse light to a switch on the dash, cut off the offending plunger on the old switch, re-fitted and all is happy...:)

Thanks James I think you just saved me an expensive trip to the garage. I changed the oil last night and this morning no reverse gear:mad: . On your advise lifted centre seat box cover and the reverse switch was loose. wound it out a bit and tightened the retaining nut. Obviously worked its way in when I'd left it running to warm the engine. Solid engagement now, thanks again.
