Hi

Latest problem is the gearbox getting very difficult, particularly when hot.

Drive at 50mph or use decent amounts of throttle and there's massive friction between gears, particularly across the gate. Bashing the lever left and right seems to ease it. Once you are in gear it's fine, no whining, no jumping out.

Pootle about and it eases a bit.

It did it after 200 miles on the motorway at 60-70mph. I slowed down and had a hell of time trying to tug it out of 5th.

I've taken the stick out and poked around but the ball thing has grease on it and it looks free enough.

Oil was changed (ATF) 2,000 miles ago but I've changed it again for good measure - no difference.

if you remove tunnel and centre seat panel you will be able to get to housing ,check yoke under turret and selector shaft going to gear box ,the whole housing can be removed but you may need to lower gearbox and t/box with mounts off to do this, check internal selector shaft moves freely ,on top of cst part of gearbox case is interlock held with 2 x bolt 10mm head if selector feels tight you can remove this but dont move selector shaft with it removed and grind file the rear most leg on interlock a bit to allow easier selector movement

Thanks James. I've acquired a secondhand LT77 (short stick 53D) and a long stick turret from the scrapper today, so I think it's out with the tunnel tomorrow.

Shame I've just sound proofed it all!

gear selector housing off defender long stick wont fit on short stick box without changing internal selector shaft or making adapter to fit, apart from bell housing and input shaft

I think the plan is to strip the selector and, if necessary, box and use whatever is necessary from the scrapyard bits.

I saw a 200tdi that was fitted with a short stick box once - it didn't look too bad.

Ah well. I've no idea what the suffix is on the existing box, and I can always swap it for another one at the scrappers.

My best Land Rover mecanic in Marrakech says they strip parts off Disco boxes (I think he meant R380's, but he might have been talking about LT77 short stick) to keep the long stick LT77's running - and he looks after a few hundred of the things.

Hi, will be in Marrakech next week and is looking for a good mechanic for my 1995 Disco 300 TDI ES Auto - need gearbox out etc. You talk about "My best Land Rover mecanic in Marrakech" - would be most grateful if I could get his details.
Thx in advance :)
