LT230 Red Mud / Sealer?

Just for fun on a Saturday I have dropped the gearbox out to put in a refurbished unit at some stage. While I have it out i have dropped the PTO cover off the rear of the transfer box and it is full of what looks like thick red mud or sealer of some sort, is this normal?

I should have taken a photo before cleaning it up, but am now wondering if it should have been there?

I believe I am just completely rebuilding this without telling the wife, or am I kidding that she hasn't noticed?

thats usually a sign the input gear and main shaft splines are worn

The main splines are mainly missing, so that was an easy one then.
