OD of uprated mainshaft bearing is 62mm

Although there's a problem with using a 16mm depth bearing...

The bearing centre sits proud of the bearing so that the oil pick up ring sits around it:

Also not convinced by the guy at the bearings shops measuring, I get 15mm for the thickness of the center...

hum yer i see my concern with that would be... what effect that would have on its position on the main shalft and the next component 1st gear is it going to space it out down the shaft making the whole assembly offset ( havent got one in front of me to see)

Not so much that, because you could just turn a section of the oil collar out to accommodate the bearing face, the problem is that then the plastic is a lot thinner that covers the actual race - and I'm assuming they have the collar covering the race to stop too much oil diverting through the race.

Is there a reason Ashcroft do them ? I'd have thought there was else why would they bother?

people like buying them i suppose 9 x out of 10 rear support bearings are good ,front lay shaft goes first and then usually poor oil from lack of changes, baulk rings are the weakest parts

Yer problem with them is there a bit Unique no realway of upgrading the bulkrings( unless u no something I done ) :) as for the laysshalft is there upgrade options for them ?

i just fit genuine rings they last a good few years ,and changing oil regulary is best for the bearings ,they did increase the size of rear ls and input shaft but they last no longer with dirty oil

Cool it's weather it's worth the hassle of doing the rear ones if all it takes is good oil changes to keep em tip top

its what ive found ,just done another today front ls bearing failure, but not collapsed thus writing box off luckily, but all the others had debris pressed in to bearing races

Fair enough Contaminated oil then :-/ makes u wonder how oftern is oftern enough. everyone changes engine oil every year/xmiles or 6 monts depending on use but forgets about gear oil

These two boxes I've had, 1 has been front layshaft bearing failure, the other rear support. I suspect both had probably been low oil though to be honest.

Swapping these bearings out for something bigger does seem like a pain in the arse, so given that it requires some messing about I'm probably going to avoid it.

Did some more painting to make me feel like there's been some progress :D

First coat of zinc primer, it's not great at going on tbh.

Couple of really noddy questions... better to ask than burn a box.

What should I clean everything down with as I reassemble, just some WD/release oil?

Do I need to pack any of the bearings with grease - I'm guessing no, just use some MTF?
