Anyone know of or recommend any other indies or specialists in the area other than in the list below?

Dreaded offside Ball joint fail on MOT this morning. (as that was all i count myself lucky) After the saga with the FIP i'm in the 'Cant be arsed' mood now, especialy in view of the dark cold wet days that are fast approaching. Im up for now spending hard earned cash....

Best quote is 190 all inc :)D) which i think is hard to beat, worst is 550+VAT for one side (ouch) and one who refused to even take it on

In no particular order:

Rogers of Bedford (Bedford)
Autoland 4x4 (Houghton Regis)
Vehicle Craft (Barton le Clay)
Woodside Land Rover (Maulden)

I'd rather it go to an indie as then I stand a good chance of them knowing about and doing the proper alignments on the refit...unless anyone thinks otherwise and could be done without the LR tools at mateys garage round the corner?

Cheers all.

It's only a ball joint and re-track, not rocket science.
Woodside are very good but very expensive.

It's a nice day today why not do it yourself then get it tracked

Plural - lower and upper.

Dont have the tools or similar to remove or refit the joints, and ran out of knuckle joints for the time being for the breaker bar for the hub. Will the re track save my axle oil seal? thought it had to be aligned on fitting the hub

You have confused me with tracking saving oil seals and stuff!!

All you need is a ball joint splitter and big hammer and basic socket set. The ball joints cost £10 each then drive straight to a garage to have the tracking sorted

I believe from RAVE and forum searches Theres a special tool required for centralising the hub onto the half shaft oil seal on the P38. If it's not dead central on refit the seal will fail. The (frozen, by the sounds of it) Ball joints need to be also pressed into (a super heated by the sounds of it) yoke. Lower ball joint i believe also requires adjustment on refit.

Hence the reason for CBA and would rather pay

Think you have read into it too much

Mot on one of my flock failed on slight play in lower ball joint
I have done worse jobs in my life lol
fortunately I have an extensive workshop and equipment and some hydraulic bearing and hub pullers ,never done one before but didn't find it anywhere near as bad as I have read
pressing the old one out is the problem fitting the new one with the press and a frozen ball joint was easy
Much heat was required to press out the old one
I refitted the new one with it cold at -3 degrees C and the axle heated to 120 degrees c and she pressed in easy
My advice to any one trying this is to use a heavy duty hydraulic Bearing puller at the very least and the appropriate spacers and the correct use of heat and cold when fitting the new one

There used to be a place up in Manchester that had one for hire and listed it on Ebay a few months ago. Hopefully Gemsdad may know of them or be able to get more info.
I made my own, together with the centralising tool but it will need loads of heat on the axle yokes to shift them as well. Luckily mine are ok..made them at work before I retired (Just in case) and then bought a brand new front axle case complete with swivels fitted off Ebay for £25. The bottom joint is height adjustable and as Dorset says..you need the centralising jig otherwise the halfshaft oil seals won't last 5 minutes. The extractor I have weighs in very heavy..it needs to be to shift rusted, pressed in ball joints. Have a look on RAVE for the procedure..it aint easy..or for the faint hearted!!!!!

I'll pay you to it in a day if its that easy!

ah!

Only guys I've heard of in Bucks are John Dennis and there used to be a guy called Iain Mortimer but I think he retired a while back.

£150 sounds pretty reasonable though!
