Hello all, quick intro, I've been wanting to buy a defender 110 for as long as I can remember and after an awful experience with a freelander I put it on the back burner. Anyway, I'm an Uk ex-pat currently living in Tripoli, Libya (Yes, the same Libya you see on the news).

Like stated in the title, I've found an ex embassy defender here in Libya and i really don't want this car to pass me up, it has around 250k kilometres on it's odometer and that's about as much information as I have, as people are pretty defender illiterate around these parts that's to be expected. Parts are expensive here as well.

TDLR; What should I look out for when buying a 97 300TDI defender? Can you price check it for me? Is it worth it? How much would this be worth in UK/Europe? What questions should I ask? LR parts here are expensive.

Details: 1997 reg 110 300TDI Land Rover Defender 250k Kilometers
Asking Price: 11,000 LYD = 5500 GBP

Some can be funny about not using the 'introduce yourself' section first, but welcome

Assuming in good condition, £5k -£6k not unrealistic

Buyers guide might help you avoid any common pit falls

Defender Buyers Guide

Check chassis, bulkhead, engine for smoking and if you buy, change all fluids and timing belt

As Station House said, the price is not unrealistic for a very clean example over here. If they are not as popular over there then it may be over priced, What are other 18yr old 4x4's in good nick going for over there?
It certainly looks very clean and low on corrosion, as you would expect in a dry environment. Make sure you check components that suffer from sand etc. wheel bearings, swivels, suspension bushes, engine! Has the air filter been changed regularly? 30 second job to check the current one.

Hi - doesn't sound bad - corrosion shouldn't be a problem where you are! I've got a pdf of things to look for when buying a Discovery 300 tdi - same engine and might give you things to look for - send me a PM with your email and I'll email it to you. I have an ex-RAF 110 3.5 V8 and it was really well serviced and I would guess embassy cars we also well serviced, but I couldn't guarantee it!

Go and introduce yourself in the appropriate section before you barge right in.

As has been said, its forum etiquette.

A car living in the dessert will have sand everywhere. You will have to factor in the price of a service and if parts are expensive over there then the cost of servicing and any future maintenance as well.

Ive been to the middle east a few times and you don't see many land rovers, you do see lots of landcruisers though. If i was living out there id get a land cruiser as spares are available and cheap. Worth considering.
