hi all, going to sell or swap my 2003 d4 es and get a range rover, i am going for one around an x reg.

what would you go for ? a diesel or a petrol with lpg.

the car will be used mainly for mway driving and towing a caravan.

i travel with my job and put the mileage down as expenses so thought i might as well travel in comfort,

how reliable are these cars in particular the transmission, i do around 1600 miles a month.

You're going to hear DIESEL, DIESEL and more diesel. The gurus on this forum put derv on their cornflakes. I've seldom seen bad advice from them. I've only had petrol V8's which I've converted to LPG after purchase. I tow a caravan big time and it's just easy. The diesel penny's never dropped for me. If you could dtretch to a V8 post 1st March 2001 you get major RFL advantages if you convert to LPG. Also you can dispense with the catolytic converters and go stainless right through. Of course, the decision's yours and I'm no expert. These are personal observations. There's much penned on this matter and a search will give you hours of reading. regards P.S

hi, i guess you mean road fund licence, - do you mean registered after march 01.

which MODEL do you have, is it worth paying extra for one with all of the toys, and what would i get from an lpg one per gallon.

i have read people saying they get 100 miles on a tenner. i want mine for mainly motorway and then towing a caravan but i dont want to be stuck doing 50mph ( when not towing ) just to save a few mpg.

regards

Well i have a diesel, but more for fuel economy than anything (and servicing too its easy, less maintenance all around) BUT if my boss was paying for the fuel etc, then i would chose a V of some kind, and convert it to gas, but i would rather have the conversion done by myself that buy one with it already done (there are a lot of cowboys out there) at lest you know you have been to a reputable company, and it has been done correctly, because when they go bad, they go very bad!! get one with all the toys and spoil yourself

Hi
I have a 4.6hse on lpg and my dad has a 2.5dse so i can compare them quite well, the diesel is a good motor but it is sluggish unless chipped and it is also noisy but i took it to blackpool and it gets along pretty good on the motorway once its wound up, but as i said it is noisy. On the oyher hand my 4.6 is older (96) compared to my dads (02) i have spent a lot on it in the last 18 months new engine, maf etc that could be down to its age but i wouldnt trade my v8 for a diesel no way, its quiet, powerful and very responsive, just make shure its a good lpg system thats fitted, fuel wise i get around 12mpg around town and about 22 on a run, lpg here is .36ppl.
Hope this helps
Mark

lpg every time on a V8, diesel smelly, noisey and bloody slippery if stood on/in! lpg smoth and cheap, quiet and powerfull (if V8) lpg every time for me. and i think cheaper too! i get 180 miles for £25 worth of gas. so say 360 miles for £50! 720 miles for £100! my mates chipped dse dont do that amount of miles im sure, and it cost him £95 to fill up!

i got mine with the conversion allready done, in aprill 04 it was fitted and i got it in jan 05! seems strange it was only used for year and half? was fitted by reputable dealer in biggin hill, got certificate for it, safety notice for tank ETC.........

I'm just wading through the "exchange of vehicle license" V70 thing at the mo. I've spoke to DVLA and the magic date is AFTER 1st March 2001. I have a fiesta flame 2004 which goes from £140 to £120 and a r rvr westminster 2002 4 litre from £385 to £190. They have to be taxed in the correct tax group before they can have their V5's changed. I've never heard of anyone buying a range rover as an economy measure. I have a 93litre tank which won't ever take any more than 70 or 80 litres on a good day. The range I get is 200-230 miles. When towing that drops to about 170-180. Needless to say, motorway driving is a sleeping tablet for anyone but with a r rvr V8 it tends to be a lot less taxing. Towing is a breeze. I have a bessacarr twin axle 550GL plus the wife's economy of loading ! Regrettably, I can't comment on diesels but I can say if you don't watch what you're doing at purchase you can come unstuck big time. My advice is to read this forum before even looking at the adverts. Best of luck. Regs P.S

I have been told (a few times) that you can get a LPG system for a diesel, i was reading about it on another forum yesterday, an it greatly improves the torque acceleration, and nose it runs a lot smoother, but not a lot of difference on fuel cost, but is a very big improvement all around

The only things that matter are (you choose in which order)

Miles per pound £££ and "driveability".

Of course, if you choose wisely you might get both!

hi all

if you read my other posts you will see that i have been having fun with my td4.

its been a brill car, so i shouldnt complain about 1 little problem. so next time i am going for a petrol and get it lpg

V8 Petrol on petrol is the best. Anything else is a compromise. How ever good an LPG conversion you get, you always have trouble of some description either now or a few years down the line. Plus you loose your boot size and you worry about where to fill it.

I am not rich, but it's a nice feeling knowing my V8 is running on what it's supposed to run on. Fill it up and do 400 worry free miles. No thinking about where to fill up every half an hour. Sure it costs more, but for the peace of mind it's worth it in my book.

Why do they not make these cars run on LPG in the first place? If they were built from the ground up to work on LPG then I'd have one.

I have to say I haven’t found getting LPG difficult, most of the bigger BP garages have it. But yes I agree if you have the tank in side the car you loose your boot, but there are other options, you can now have a tank in the spare wheel housing, or have the tanks fixed under the vehicle, as to problems I can’t say I have ever had any more problems than usual. A friend of mine has run LPG for over ten years now without having any problems.
