I'm considering removing my lpg system from my 4.6 Gems as I do so little mileage and I would like the car to revert to stock as much as possible.

Anybody done this and do you have any thoughts about the best procedure?

Also I would be happy to sell the above kit for very sensible money if anyone is interested - it's the OMVL Dream XX1 with a doughnut tank - very recent set of new injectors.

I have no idea how you decommission the system sorry, except run it empty before you do anything.
I have heard the wiring can be a bit of an issue depending on how it was fitted. So care is needed when removing the wiring.

Is it the multipoint/sequential type? Think that’s the right description.

If so I may be interested but would only need the underbonnet stuff (not the tank).

Thanks
J

I would suggest leaving it. You never know and it is a positive selling point. The government will start a war on diesel and petrol later but LPG might be safe a bit longer. Then there's the MoT test, if it starts showing a bit on emissions then it'll almost certainly pass on gas.

The coolant pipes will need joining back together. Then there's the gas injectors, the holes will need blanking off after removal. Then the hole where the gas-filler goes through will need making good and any holes in the boot floor. The wiring is just spliced on top so just remove but there will be a switch inside and another hole to make good.

Seems an awful lot of hassle for no benefit.

I've removed an LPG kit from my old Jag, and put it in my P38.

It's easy peasey, the worst bit will be finding a neat way to cap/fill the holes left behind from the fixings. There may be holes in the chassis from pipe clips, and there will be holes in the boot from the tank mounting hardware. A hole maybe in the dash from the LPG level gauge.

I would suggest you buy a new inlet manifold and replace your LPG one with that. On my Jag I used that epoxy metal stuff to fill the holes.
The LPG one will have been drilled and tapped for the LPG injectors and you'll never get it to look as neat as if you just replace it.

There's also the chance that a lot of the injector wiring will have been cut and soldered to the LPG ECU. You'll have to put all that back.

I'd also replace any coolant hoses that have been cut rather than reconnect them (for neatness).

Don't worry about gas leaks, there's a valve on the tank, and in the engine bay, so there's only a teaspoon of gas in the injector rail. That will blow away as soon as you open the injector rail up. Just don't do it smoking! I'd still drive the tank to empty before removal. First it's a waste of gas, and second the tank will be much lighter to lift!!

At the end of the day, it's easy as long as you work methodically and take your time. You'll need a letter from a mechanic for the DVLA saying the car has been inspected and the equipment is removed so they can update their database.

That's it really.

I'll happily buy your front end stuff if you do go down this route.

I've fitted a couple of LPG kits, I'm about to do a third, and happy to answer any questions as best I i can. But I'm not a pro installer, just a keen DIYist.

Grrrrr makes a good point about HM Government - I was/am considering removing the heads and looked at all the lpg guff scattered across the 'bay and how much more accessible everything would be without it - also the reports that the Gems mill can suffer from running on gas.

There are still a significant amount of petrol/diesel vehicles being sold new, so i'm willing to bet we'll be safe for quite a few years there is also a new Petrol to be released in 2020 called E10 i believe.. ;)

Besides LPG is good, hopefully they'll realise the potential and install more stations. ;)

Loads of LPG here:).
Personally stay away from anything with that E stuff in it. Unless very new car.

Most of that is BS. There's nothing in LPG can hurt a Rover V8. They're just not very well built in the first place!!

I'd stick with it, it's cheap and cheerful, add certainly won't reduce the value of your car.

That E10 stuff is everywhere in the USA. It's cheap, but 10% ethanol derived from corn. Not sure if there's an overall saving to be made or not. It's (even) lower octane than the normal stuff.... if that makes a difference.

A lot of hassle to remove if not transferring to another vehicle I reckon.
Easy enough to fit LPG but you will need it inspected by a registered installer for your insurance

Never had any problem with Ms P38 gems running LPG. If left on LPG it seem to splutter a bit on petrol but soon cleared up.
Almost like sticky/dry injectors if that makes sense, but other than that LPG no problem.

E in the fuel is another story and I don’t want to run it in any of my old vechiles (oldest is 2008 bike)thanks.

LPG from what i've read has a secure future, so i'll be keeping it on my V8 regardless..

Doesn't matter if petrol goes upto £10 a litre he he he :p:D

OP i'd keep it, no point in removing, doesn't detract from the vehicle IMO! :D

I'd leave it on tbh.....just don't bother using it if you don't want too....but when it come to sell it, LPG will increase its 'appeal' to more.

Also on the subject of installation - it needs to be done in accordance with COP11 (I think it is called) of the LPG code of practice...I have a hardcopy at work, I may scan it in as a pdf one day.

Ok, chaps, thanks for the voice of reason - guess I'll keep it.

Just a last question for you learned folks - can the system be serviced by the likes of ourselves or does the car have to go to an lpg facility?

Servicing is pretty simple. Mostly it's just a new filters. Sometimes they're in the gas stage, sometimes in the liquid stage.

To tune it, you'll need software and a lead to connect your laptop to the ECU. I got mine with the kit I bought, I'm sure you could get them from eBay for your system.

After a lot of miles, you might need to rebuild the reducer and injectors. I'm about to do mine after about 100k miles. The injectors is just O rings, but the reducer is a bit more complicated.... although I haven't done it yet so I'm not sure what to expect!!!

Oh, they won't ban it. They'll just hike the tax until they have the rest of your wages.

Aye! if they want all hell to break loose!!

But with the future of LPG bright and from what i read it'll still be cheap, who cares!!

Not going to say anymore, incase i jinx something ;)

Ain't nobody stopping me drive my P38 ;)
