I am just suffering the pain (time and financially) of having a new head gasket fitted on my P38 4.6. I am thinking that an LPG conversion might be the next big expense I lavish on it, but someone told me (who worked for a LR dealer a few years ago) that an LPG conversion will cook the heads due to the fact LPG burns hotter than petrol. My heads have just been skimmed to the max I think so this would be an unwelcome surprise if I got an LPG conversion. Can anyone shed any light on this? Those of you who have had conversions carried out on your P38, how did it go and do you have any recommendations or comments? Cheers. Your advice is always sound and appreciated...

I've never had a P38 but I do have a 110 CSW 3.5 litre, RR Classic 4.2 litre and Disco II 4.0 litre all with LPG conversion. 110 has been converted many years ago, RR Classic I converted 6 years ago - and recently converted the Disco II. The fact that I converted the Disco says it all really. I cover large mileages and I have never ever had problems of any sort with LPG. Certainly no suspicion of overheating. In fact the oil is noticeably cleaner for longer using LPG which suggests to me that there is reduced engine wear going on.

110 has done 200,000 miles (probably 50% on LPG) - RR Classic 175,000 miles (50,000 on LPG)

With the cost per mile benefits using LPG there is no thinking to be done. Go for it

the guy that just fixed the lpg (single point) on my p38 4.6 say lpg only runs 3 degress hotter than petrol. Mine seems fine, if not better on lpg.

No
it dont have the same cooling effect of petrol. The burn rate and temperature are different too.
This is why it aint recomended for cars that are prone to overheating / have built in hotspots / prone to HGF.
Petrol freebie owners note!

The more folks Poo Poo LPG the better. Means less conversions more lpg at the pumps for us and no pressure to raise the price. The only thing that will wreck your engine is never lifting the bonnet. Why are you having your heads done ? If your having trouble then dont fork out just yet until its all been ok'ed.
