Hi mark-wrx,

Looking at the workshop manual, it says remove the steering knuckle. To do this means removing the wheel, abs sensor, hub bearings unit, drive shaft.

Then the manual shows several special tools to remove the steering ball joints from the axle. It mentions looking for yellow paint marks, due to the ball joints only being able to be replace up to three times, (each renewal needs a yellow paint mark to be made) then a new axle, due to mounting hole wear.

Perhaps someone who has done this job may know a quicker and easier way without all the dismantling, (a trick of the trade).

Workshop manual says: remove four bolts holding wheel hub to steering knuckle. Remove wheel hub and drive shaft together.

So it looks as though the drive shaft should just pull out of the axle casing, using the still attached wheel hub as a handle.

If you only want to overhaul the lower ball joint, you can leave the drive shaft and wheel hub together.
