I have a 300tdi 2.5 auto.

It will not hold low range keeps poping out of low.

any ideas on how to fix.

Had a similar problem with mine due to lack of use it was very stiff and not fully engaging. Are you sure you are putting it in low fully?

If you put it in the car in neutral then select low range. Put the car in drive and release the brake it may/may not move a foot or two then put it back in neutral and try again with the low range selection. You may find the lever will go further.

I used to have to do this sometimes with mine but eventually just freed up with use.

It is not from lack of use. It has just changed. Can not even hold it in pops out straight away. On an old one i used to have to hold it. This i can not even hold it in still pulls the boat off the beach but sometimes when the soft sand has built up low range is helpful.

I would suggest you remove centre console and 12 pop rivets (5mm dia), remove lever housing and check lever for correct operation. It would be a good idea to clean and lubricate whilst you have it out. Next check linkage is operating correctly. Sounds like something is broken or has come loose.
I am not sure about automatics but does the difflock engage when low ratios are engaged?
