Low range gearbox fualt

Hi everybody
my name is paul frm bradford i have 2.5dse range rover and just wonder if anybody could help me.When i to put it into 4wd low the gear cog flashs on the dash and the message say select neutral comes up.All hi gears work just as they should could anybody help please

I assume that you are stationary at the time you're trying to change and that you are just moving the lever from Neutral High range to Neutral Low range?

How long does the beeping and flashing orange light continue for? Mine takes a couple of seconds to change.

Have you tried wiggling the lever in low range neutral? It might be that it just thinks you're not in neutral even if you are. My low range box selections are slightly out of step with the high range. i think they can be adjusted fairly easily.

So you move the gear lever to neutral, push it to the left (assuming RHD) low range neutral and wait for the message centre to tell you that you are in low range. If you try to select a gear before the range change is finished, it will not be happy.

Sorry to hijack the thread, I have the same problem with my P38. The lights on the low gear cogs flashes but thats just it. It didn't change to the low gears. I fiddled with the gear lever but nothing happens. What should I look for?

Bad connections to range change motor, or motor seized. Worth checking fuses first.

Manual or Auto? Messages on dash?

How to check for all the things u mentioned Datatek? Where is the location of the fuses?

Auto. When I put the lever to Low Range, it only flashing but theres no messages on the dash. Only when I put it in D (Low range), the "select Neutral" comes on.

It sounds as though the motor is not moving as Datatek suggests. Do you get the 'Low' flashing in the dash when you move it across the gate from High to Low? The warning symbol would indicate the Transfer box ECU is not obtaining the requisite parameters to change the ratio - Speed less than 5mph / gearbox in neutral / ability to read the motor position. Your problem seems to be it's not reading the motor position. It does this by reading a 'Gray' (binary) code on the motor so it a)knows where it is and therefore what range it's in and b) therefore which way to turn the motor. A bad connection would give erroneous readings and give the warning on the dash. The 'Select Neutral' message when you move it to Drive shows the neutral switch is OK so it's looking more and more like connections or the motor itself.

I didn't get the "low" flashing while switching from hi to low. Only the amber lights on the low cog flashing.

Then it does sound as though the Transfer Box is not reading the position of the motor. It won't try to move anything until it knows where the motor is. You'll have to check the wiring and/or the motor. The code for the position of the motor is determined by 4 switches on the motor/encoder. The transfer box ECU will read these 4 switches and determine a binary code for when they're off/on (0 & 1 (or 1 & 0 depending on which way it reads them)). If one or more of these switches is faulty, it will not work.
Also, of course, if you haven't used the 'Low' range for some time, it could be just stuck.

Where is the location of the motor? Im sorry to ask the silly question because Im not so familiar with my P38.

The low range work when i engaged it yesterday. BUT, when i tried to engage it the 2nd time, it didn't engage. I only gets the flashing low gear cog.

The motor is underneath, next to the big round thing ( handbrake drum) which is on the end of the rear prop shaft
( big round pole going to the rear axle)

believe you can add power to it by wiring it directly to move the motor from one position to the other

I suggest that you get a copy of Rave. Is the best way that you can use to get familiar with your P38 and it help a lot. You can find the wire diagram of the transfer motor and do some troubleshooting.

Thanks for the info Cavey. I will look at the motor and see whats happen.

I have the copy but I can be bothered to refer to it I will have a look at the RAVE and see if I can fig out something Again, thanks mate

Did you get this sorted ? I have same issue on mine.

check all feeds to the motor if you get the feed and the earth is good suspect the motor but be aware somtimes they can also burn out the t box ecu so check tha t dos n smell of burntness

I have this problem also but mines a manual gearbox. Im stationary in neutral with handbrake on. The cog light flashes when i press the button to engage low box then message select neutral appears. Tried wiggling lever but nothing.
