Morning lz, I have a 300tdi auto and as the title says I have just noticed a loud ticking noise coming from the engine. It appears to be coming from the back of the air con?. The air con is not in use, has not worked for years. The noise is between the fuel pump and the front of the air con unit,I think. It speeds up with the engine.
Any ideas what this could be?
Regards
Terry.

Sound not coming from further back?

Lift pump maybe? other than that A/C pulley bearing ...

Dippypud,it might be. If it was the lift pump would I be able to feel it knocking?

Use a long handled screwdriver, listen to the handle end and put the screwdriver end against the lift pump. You should be able to tell then.

My 90 had a similar noise, turned out to be the head gasket blowing at the back of the engine.

Just tried that James,it all sounds pretty much the same.I tried it on the rocker cover, lift pump and back of the air con unit. It didn't start ticking when I started it up,took about a minute to get going!.

id think from what you say tappets, vac or lift pump, if you remove vac to try it hold some cardboard etc over hole to stop oil splashing everywhere

Do you know if/when it last had a timing belt, that's in the same area and could be making a noise if one of the idlers has gone causing the belt to be slack

try the fuel lines, sounds daft but my old 300tdi started with a loud ticking noise then proceeded to start cutting out. fitted a new lift pump but still noise and losing power/cutting out. found the fuel lines were gummed up, blew them out and all was well again.
