Hi all,

I came to start my 4.6 at the end of the working day, and when I turned the key, it very briefly turned over and then there was a loud metal on metal knock/bang and then nothing!!
I tried a couple of times and the same thing happened again and again,
Getting ready to ring the AA (I work 20 miles away from home)I tried a final time and..... it started !!

I've looked for starter motor problems on here but no similar results,
does anybody have any ideas/suggestions of what might be about to go wrong ?

Thanks in advance.

P.s I just went to try again (after leaving it an hour) and the same thing happened, it sounds like something is getting jammed.

Could be starter bendix climbing the ring gear. If so the nose bush will be knackered.

I don't think I'm loosing coolant (too dark to check) it didn't overheat on the way home which is an hour of stop start traffic,

I'll do some research into the starter bendix climbing the ring gear,
and definitely search nose bush as I've never heard of this!!!

Thanks for the quick response guys, much appreciated.

Think best thing is to take starter off and have a look. Research will not repair it. The nose bush is the bush in the nose of the starter that holds the shaft. The bendix is slid along the shaft by the solenoid, which when the bendix is engaged with the ring gear, puts power through the starter. If the bendix is worn or has lost a tooth and the nose bush is worn the bendix is forced out of mesh with the ring gear. You would usually get a grating noise, but if the bendix is short of a tooth it can climb onto the top of the ring gear teeth and jam the starter.

Will it always eventually catch on or would it do more damage trying all the time ? This is my only form of transport and need to get to work.

It'll fubar the starter as it is a scarifical part. If you're really unlucky you might get chunks of metal in the bellhouse and if you're extremely unlucky you can rip off a tooth on the flywheel.

So get it fixed sooner rather than later.

That's up to you, if indeed that is the problem. I am only giving an opinion on what i think maybe the cause. But knackering the ring gear you really don't want to be doing.

Nothing to add but 'fubar'! Now there's a phrase I havent heard for many a year!! ;)

Hi again,

so...... got the old starter motor out (nightmare), and the casing that goes half way around the cog thingy had been smashed of !!!
so fished out the broken bit, matched up the old one to the new one, everything the same, brill, fitted new one hey presto we're on our way again, went to the shop, everything fine, went to a mates, everything fine, so on the way home called at the petrol station and filled the gas up... £50.. sod it lets give it a wee run on petrol (heard to do this every now and then is a good thing) stuck £30 of petrol in as well, everything fine, night night car I'm going for a well deserved drink.
6.00am!!! "chunk" (jamming metal sound), exact same symptoms as before.

Is this now the ring gear that needs replacing ????

I got a quote (just in case) and the chap said if I supply the ring gear he'd do it for £200,
does this sound reasonable ??

Thanks for all your input on this issue, greatly appreciated.
Cheers.

So it was the nose bearing then? Sounds like ring gear knackered you should have done starter straight away instead of trying to start it. Sounds like bendix is climbing ring gear again. £200 is a snip i think. Although it may have knackered your new starter aswell.
