Any Body Help I purchased my first Land rover 3 weeks ago and I love it and the on the A5 it just lost all drive, no whines no clunks just stopped

I can hear a slight noise sounds like a dodgy thrust bearing, before I take it all to bits any body no how I can distinguish if its the gearbox or the clutch

thanks all

Ian

To start with, please give us more information: eg. Discovery 200tdi/300tdi/v8/td5...manual/automatic?

To start checking the problem:
- check if transfer box is still engaged at 4H, then put in gear
- if no drive still, engage diff lock, then put in gear
- if no drive still, most probable clutch is gone (manual), gearbox/transfer box issue (auto)

If you get drive when 4h selected....good....no drama here.

If you only get drive when diff lock selected, either axle is losing drive:
- check prop shaft
- if prop shaft okay, one of the half-shaft is gone

come back and let us know what happens...!!

Yes the car does....but dont drive in diff lock for long distance on normal circumstance.

When diff lock is not selected, you have 3 open differential (front, rear and center), hence any lost of drive to any one wheel will cause all power to be delivered to that wheel....so selecting diff lock (locking center diff) will transfer some power t the other axle.

Hi There its a 200tdi,I jacked up the front and tried the driving with the diff lock on no turning of the wheels tried all all gears and both ratios.

Hoping just clutch

bean lol

I'd remove the round cover from the back of the transfer box, then you can see if the transfer gear/output splines are ok.

Did it clunk on take off ?

no clunks or whines just stopped on a5 near Canock, im bidding on box on the bay just in case fingers crossed

Can I get to the plate whilst the box is in situe

thanks 4 the help

before bidding on a replacement gearbox...double confirm if it's the clutch that has gone....

- put it in gear...start the car....if car can be started....clutch gone...power from engine not getting to the transmission
- put it in gear...start the car....if car jerks and can't be started...clutch okay.....(a) gearbox issue (b) gearbox okay, but not getting to the transfer box

input gear on transfer box do not go without clunking in the first place....however, clutch does...

With a bit of luck it is just the clutch, but if he removes the plate he can tell if the gearbox is turning or not.

Being as there's no drive it should start in gear in any case.

Have you checked the transfer box hasn't just slipped into neutral (its in the middle, in between high and low)?

with the engine running in neutral you can hear the main gearbox spinning inside. this will tell you if the clutch has sheared or not.

and then yeah definitely need to take the rear cover off the transfer case and see whats happening there.

tbh it's really rather likely that the transfer case has come out of gear, this is probably the only thing that would happen without ANY noises etc.

cheers.

hi guys got the pins on plate soaking with a bit of wd , as tight as Mrs purse strings,

It Will start in any gear,no jerking I can feel it trying to pull in low ratio and then gives up,tried every ratio just in case it slipped into neutral,no luck

cheers all

Right Ive taken cover off(this is where you say wrong one lol) there's a central shaft well oiled on a bearing no movement,no signs of damage

any ideas

no noise can be heard in box any more

cheers

when you take that cover off, you can clearly see the shaft is splined, and the gear which is pushed onto it should be connected to it.

often the splines wear out and so the shaft slips inside the gear.

turn the starter in gear to check for movement/slippage (do not fire the engine)

cheers
