Morning all,
I have a 51 plate 4.6 vouge P38.
Its seems that when im going up a slight incline at say 60-70 mph i loose power, big time !

I think this maybe the MAF ? But dont have the lumpy idle , any ideas chaps ???

Cheers

Andy

andy just get it hot and unplug maf take it for a run find a big hill and give it a try i would do this befor i put any money in to it lets know how you get on j

Hi J ,
Thanks for the reply , do you know if an allen key will fit the 2 torque screws , or do i just unclip the whole lot ?

Cheers
Andy

just pulg no need to undo anything just make sure it up to temp first or it will run like crap i just changed mine for same reason popping and would not pick up on open road fine now fingers crossed lets know how it goess j

Hey J

I unplugged the MAF on my RRC 3.9 yesterday and it cut out and wouldn't start for about 20min. I was flippin cursing you. :) Luckily I always keep a spare battery in the boot so was able to get it going. I think it might have had to cool down or something, who knows?

hi spud maf should not stop a hot engine starting mine was missing and popping unpluged mas it stoped i went and got new one prob solved you dont say whats wrong with yours j

Sorry J,

Didn't mean to have a pop off you, I obviously have a different issue. I do feel that I'm down on power and just thought this was a handy way of eliminating the MAF as a source of the problem.
You say unplugging the MAF should not cause it to cut out? I wonder if this is a clue to my issues.

My symptoms are an uneven idle, almost always high, in fact it often wont stay stopped at a junctioin without a good shove on the brakes, it also will often run along at a good 15mph at 1100 rpm with my foot off the throttle. In neutral it will settle down to 750/800 rpm but then will almost stall when I select reverse.

Thanks
Cormac

Is it an auto? Sounds like the gearbox has issues ... like a dragging clutch on a manual.

Hey Paul,

Yeah its an auto but I don't know whether thats having a big effect or not.
Here goes on a full list of symptoms:
RRC 3.9 with 141,500 miles on original engine. I had the camshaft changed with an uprated piper cam (I put in a mild upgrade recommended for 4x4, not a hot cam) from Kent cams not long ago, much better running after but other symptoms now noticeable.
Starts really well when cold and burbles away at 750/800 rpm. Seems to pull well when cold and then get worse as it goes along a journey but this is completely subjective, I might just be really happy that it started and every thing is rosey first thing :)
Once she's fully warm it runs along at between 25 and 30mph in drive with your foot of the pedal. Put it into neutral while on the move and it bounces between 1200 and 1500rpm. When you come to a stop and put it into park it revs high for a litttle bit then settles down to a reasonably consistent 800ish rpm.
Always threatens to stall when I select reverse (used to often stall before cam change)
Can be difficult to start when hot, like its flooded.

I must do a bit of research into the way the autobox interacts with the throttle. My gut feeling is that its overfueling as when it wont start when its hot you just have to leave it alone for a few minutes and then it will start.

Any suggestions?

hi spud from what you saying it sounds like it running rich do you have anybody you know that could do co for you maybe some body in garage that you go for mot? j
