Hi all,

New landy owner here. Family have always had them but this my first! Have a 2003 Freelander Kalahari TD4.

Was driving down a duel carriageway this morning about 60mph when all of a sudden I noticed I lost power, the engine was still running, all the electrics were still working etc, I still had revv's and could rev as normal but I just gradually slowed down and coasted half a mile when I could pull over. Stopped turned off the ignition and pretty much immediatley re-started the engine and pulled away with no problems for the rest of my journey.

I realise this is probably a general issue rather than a Land Rover specific issue and thats it's probably been talked about on here before but could only find similar threads but not the exact problem.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Joe

Did you have any warning light s on the dash? it sounds like it went into limp mode and reset itself when the ignition was turned off I've had the same thing with a Skoda octavia.

Hey Bizzie, thanks for the quick reply. Nope no warning lights at all. It felt literally like I was in nuetral. However could feel the gears go in etc. Did your car repeat this or was it just a one off?

Only happened the once for me but did get the management light on when it happened and no fault coeds were stored so don't know what caused it it was a bit scary though happened on the M62 in the outside lane near Leeds and the all 3 lanes were packed.

It happens quite a lot on VWs with a variable vane turbo.
If an overboost is picked up it shuts down the turbo boost to save the engine.
A flick off the ignition switch resets it.

However if the engine loses boost it still runs still runs in limp mode and does not cut out.
If the the engine cut out completely on the OPs TD4 I don`t think this is the problem

Cheers for the advice Webley. I'l keep and eye out and if it happens again will persevere and see if it is in limp mode rather than panicking and stopping! Be good to know, although here's hoping it's just a one off!

Is this an auto or manual?

You hadn't been admiring another car had you, the landys get jealous easily, just treat it with love and care, occasionally tell it how wonderful it is and spend lots of time and money on it and it'll be fine.;)

My TD4 auto went into something like limp home mode, a few weeks back, but I'm sure it wasn't. It would not accelerate above 2500 rpm under load and felt like it had a misfire and when I came to a stop at junctions I thought it was going to stall. It didn't.

After I got back home, it started fine the next day (as in lumpy & smoky start as per normal) and has been fine ever since.
