Hi apologies if this is a repeated topic, but im getting sleepy now after 3 days of my freelander breaking down lol.

I was driving along quite happily, at 30 when suddenly my landy stuttered, no warning lights came on. The rev counter just started going up and down, the car shuddered more and I stopped, it then wouldnt start. I called out the AA who cleaned the earth battery connection, the car started and no further problems. Till the next morning lol, I was doing about 65 when the car started to sudder again, the revs started going up an down again. I revved the engine up a little to get me into my depo, I was only round the corner. Called out the AA again, he cleaned the top battery earth connection and the bottom one too. The car started up no problems and was fine running about. Then today on the motorway I was doing 70 it suddenly started to sudder again the revs started going up and down. I quickly got on the hard shoulder, it wouldnt even start up and I then called the AA out again lol. They put the car on a low loader and took me to the services where a patrol was waiting for me. But after all that he didnt even touch the car and it started up no problems!! strange. He looked it over, could not see a problem, he also ran a diagnostic thing (sorry about the terminology ;-) ) It didnt show any problems at all with the car. I do need to fit a new expansion tank which if I can will get tmoz, I now plan on doing a full coolant flush and also put some of that petrol cleaner stuff in the petrol in case its just a blockage. I am by no means an experienced mechanic, I can happily do the basics, changing my windscreen wiper assembly, oil changes etc. Anything too technical and Ill have to get my garage to do it, prob is i'm a little skint at the moment but need the landy for work as I use it to deliver parcels. So any advise and very simple instructions lol will be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

As mentioned, more of an electrical problem than a fuel one! If the car is stopped, then everything cools down and works fine! Waiting for the AA to turn up would give it plenty of time to cool!

Thank you very much, is it possible to test the cps or just easier to put a new one on?? I was thinking the engine had time to cool, but the temp gage never went above the norm half way. Would this still be a dodgy cps?

When the CPS went in my car, it just cut out, no stuttering etc. i had to wait about 30 minutes and then it would start without any problems! Temperature gauge would still show normal temp when I restarted! A new CPS was installed and I haven't had this problem reoccurr again! However, the problem may be something entirely different in your car but I reckon getting the CPS changed is a start and in one sense, even if it isn't that, at least you can discount it and you have a new sensor!

Fabulous thank you, I've found a shop that stocks them not far from me so once I've dropped my munchkins off at nursery tmoz I can spend the day trying to fit new one, may not be the problem but its a good start. Fingers crossed and ill let you know the out come. Time to start reading up on rave I think lol. X

Sounds more like an ignition problem! Crank sensors tend to work or not, ie run ok or don't run at all, if your rev counter is shooting up and down I'd start checking all your ignition system connections,
How old is it? Has it got a distributor?

It's an 02 reg, erm sorry I don't actually know if it has a distributor. What would I be looking for in the engine?

A distributer!

on the right hand side of the engine is there a big round plastic cover bolted to the end of the head, it will have ignition leads sticking out of it.

I don't think a 2002 1.8 will have a dizzy? But even if it does it will only do the HT ;) If the crank sensor fails it should log a fault with the ecu!! I'd check for chaffed wires in the engine bay somewhere near the ecu. You could try unplugging the ecu and replug it to clean the contacts!!

Lol no it's not got a distributor, lol tbh I know what a CPU is but not a distributor, mainly as I've never had to come across it :) thank you very much tho ill check the connections if there a bit loose or mucky it could stop the signals couldn't it?? I know I sound a bit vague an I'm sorry for that I'm no mechanic. But, I've done a fair few bits on my landy, and yes I hold my hands up when I fitted the window regulator on the drivers door, it now works the opposite way round lol, but it works and I was drunk when I fitted it - poss not the best idea! Ha ha. I am grateful for your assistance tho. Ps I'm a she not a he, :). X

Ha ha maybe you should change that to try's to. lol. Though it musta looked funny me sat on the path taking my door apart with a bottle of jd. Woops. I wanted to get it fixed ASAP an didn't wanna wait till next day.

such a spoil sport, sigh. Ha ha. Don't worry I won't x, I only drink on sat nights I'm always driving next morn otherwise :-(.

Early ones had a distributor late ones didn't! That's what I was getting at. The engine managements different depending which systems on it!
