Hi guys,

On my 96 p reg 300tdi disco, when go up a steady hill it seems to lose all power and drop from 70mph to 45 with my foot to the floor which has been happening for a while, noticed this morning and this afternoon when I give it done boot and I get to 3700 revs up to around 4700 I get quite allot black smoke and it starts to like misfire / judder as if Theseus not enough of something if you know what I mean??
Any ideas?
Had a new fuel and air filter within last month.

Have you checked inside the turbo pipes? They tend to de-laminate with age and restrict the turbo.

I thought that might have been a mis-type, I hit 3000rpm last night driving into gale force winds, otherwise it's just as uncle albert say's:confused:

that is still high, its a work horse not a race car. have you done sedimentor & fuel and air filters? if you regularly rev that high could be internal damage

Agreed, they don't like being revved too high, if you drive it hard then that might be the problem. If not check all three hose's, if they're fine time to check out if the turbo is running ok.

No very very rarely go above 3000 to be honest. Air and fuel filter done within last month, sedimentor not touched for 12 months will check it tomorro will also check turbo hoses.
Thanks

Not sure exactly but I have good speed going into a climb and normally around half way up I have to change down a gear to tryand keep a constant speed other wise I slow down quite quickly, can't really be more specific sorry.

Had a good look about on the disco today.
removed all turbo hoses and there doesnt seem to be any de lamination or rips/holes in the pipes.
However 2 things I did notice where the top elbow that connects to the turbo is quite mis shaped and buldged on the elbow.
Also there seems to be abit of black / oily layer through the pipes.

Any ideas?

The elbow pipe usualy give the trouble. They can appear to be ok but when the engine is under load and turbo spinning a flap of rubber peels away and partialy blocks the air intake . When the engine returns to lower revs the flap returns back to normal.

I had something similar to your problem happening to me a couple of years ago. Loss of power and plenty of black smoke. And like yours mine seemed to run okay on the flat.

How old is your timing belt? it was my belt that caused my probs. It had jumped a tooth and as a result just put the timing out slightly, but it was enough to reduce power and create black smoke.

Thats my next job to be carried out before Christmas, hopefully wil sort it out, it's due to bd changed. Thanks for all your comments
