Loss of 4 wheel drive

Hoping anyone can help. I have a 2008 freelander 2. I've lost st 4 wheel drive., here is how it happened. First the all terrain response unit failed giving me no traction control, abs, etc. Then when it was snowing I went to pull away all 4 wheels spun but the front ones found grip and I heard a big bang. The car still drives but front wheels only, so when the car is parked engine off in gear or neutral I can turn the prop and the whole prop can turn from front to back. When the car has it fronts wheels in air the prop does not spin, however when the car is moving along the road the prop is turning probably with the motion of the rear wheels. There is no noise from anywhere when driving and after driving the front part of the prop is warm. Can anyone help to diagnose.

I imagine you have snapped the output shaft in the transmission housing, forward of where the prop shaft connects, an unusual failure !

My VW Tiguan did the same thing. It turned out the Haldex unit had failed. Thankfully it was replaced by VW under warranty.
