My mate and I are considering a 7.5 ton lorry-is this the most bull**** free way to do it

CPC EXEMPT
There are exceptions from the Driver CPC qualification for drivers of vehicles:

used for non-commercial carriage of passengers or goods, for personal use;

undergoing road tests for technical development, repair or maintenance purposes, or of new or rebuilt vehicles which have not yet been put into service;

used in the course of driving lessons for the purpose of enabling that person to obtain a driving licence or a Driver CPC;

carrying material or equipment to be used by that person in the course of his or her work, provided that driving that vehicle does not constitute the driver's principal activity*

with a maximum authorised speed not exceeding 45 km/h;

used by, or under the control of, the armed forces, civil defence, the fire service and forces responsible for maintaining public order;

used in states of emergency or assigned to rescue missions

*An example of a driver under exemption vii (also known as 'incidental driver') would be a brick layer who drives a load of bricks from the builder's yard to the building site and then spends their working day laying bricks. In this case, driving a lorry is incidental to their main occupation.

Drivers can move in and out of an exemption, depending on the circumstances in which they are driving. For example, a bus mechanic would be exempt while driving a bus to check that it had been repaired, but would need to hold a Driver CPC if they also drove a bus on a passenger carrying service.

Operators licence-Private use=no licence required

Apart from insurance,MOT and Tax-have we missed anything?

Tacho exempt as not for hire or reward

Banger Racing and aware MAM rules

Transporting my own cars as a hobby:p no payment for moving them:p

got the vosa blokes email address and will find a scenario that fits no cpc or operator licence

Is it banger racing that you want to use it for?

What tax class are you looking at using it under?

Why will the vehicles be transported and not driven?
Hobby for un road worthy classic cars boss or recovery of family members broken vehicle=no reward or hire of vehicle.
Transporting my mates banger racer and not for profit.

PLG tax which bird at vosa reckons I can get away with or failing that

Local recovery and private use which both should be cpc and operator exempt.

Just finding the right formulation before emailing vosa

you should get away with it but if you got stopped by VOSA when driving it you could find yourself in a minefield which, even though you may be in the right, could take YEARS to sort out . Bearing in mind that VOSA still quote out of date laws (20 years or so) on lighting regs etc for brokendown vehicles and then like to quote trailer regs for towing cars and also like to argue about what constitutes a load and what constitutes a vehicle it all gets complicated.

You will really need to know your arse from your elbow inside and out and off the top of your head.

keep print outs of emails to and from vosa so if your stopped you can prove you asked and are acting in accordance with their answeres....

This is quite an undertaking as you are dodging quite a few regs...and VOSA don't like that - nor do they like banger lorries and will go through you with a fine tooth comb!

Insurance will be expensive, as most insurers will not insure recovery lorries - even trade insurance will only add them as a specialist addition - usually they are excluded. This will cost around £1600 for one clean driver.

When picking up donor vehicles, they are NOT disabled - which does NOT constitute recovery, that is classed as logistics - in which case you will need a waste carriers licence and run a tacho as it will be classed as 'goods'. Though you can take a car that you own to a scrap yard. Do look into this carefully!

For recovery, you are limited to 60 miles from your base without tachograph - anything over this, needs a tacho - even for private use!

You will need a trailer, as banger cars will not be permitted on the second car lift as they are not MOT'd Taxed and insured to have two wheels on the road - nor are they disabled!

If recovering cars for friends/family for no financial gain, you will still need liability insurance, GIT insurance for the vehicle on board.

If you have a crane (which you probably will) you will need an operators licence for the crane. The crane will drop your load weight down quite a bit!

You need to look are where you will race, how many cars you want to take and the cost of everything (you will NOT be mot exempt! - people will try and tell you that you will be!)

As said before - keep copies of everything you get from VOSA etc. You will be hassled quite a bit as the laws are horrendous, and they all contradict each other most of the time! For example...if you were to put a set of spare wheels on the bed, you are carrying goods! For some reason, no-one like recovery trucks and as a driver/owner you will be walking a tight rope of laws and legislation...they still beg for help when they break down though!

If you want to take one vehicle - go and buy a 3.5t transit or similar - cheaper to run, insure and has no legislation attached.

If you want to take two cars, buy a trailer for the 3.5t!

I think the cost of a 7.5t, the parking required (must be OFF ROAD), and all the other costs that come with it will more than likely price it out of the equation for private use.

Not in my case anything upto 7.5 ton and recovery vehicles £640 250 excess fully comp

They will be disabled and looking at either private ie not for gain or recovery

Think your wrong reading the current tacho exemption form from vosa

Yes beaver tail and anything capable of carrying load other than car.

Basically a project that I shouldn't loose on if I find it isn't being used when done

went up and it has syncro fault on 2nd and 3rd, one wheel arch wants a repair,washer pump, brake fluid level warning wires disconnected, minor bit on cab,wood on bed needs several pieces and small bed repair.

So after some more money off-I'm owner of a cummins 4.5bt powered daf tachograph says 160,000 km -bet it has done more-but drives okay and no smoke-for what I paid I could scrap for more
