Loose Gear Selector

Hi,

The gear selector on my 2000 4.6 Vogue is really loose. Lengthwise it's a little sloppy but the stick can be moved 1 - 2 centimeters from side to side very easily and in any gear. It's not really a problem (it doesn't rattle) and I'm used to it by now, but I'd still like to fix it.

Any ideas?

have a look to see if cable where it joins shaft going into auto box on lhs is tight

Thanks for the advice, I am a virgin to this site, do you mean accessing from inside the car, taking the gate off?
Is it an easy job?

auto selactor is directly linked to gear box by a bowden cable ,play can come from lever under consol ,or were cable fastens to box .id try the latter first as doesnt involve removing anything

does that mean climbing under the car and checking the cable? and if no joy there, taking the gear selector handle off the rod, undoing the h and looking below?

Thanks James Martin, looked this weekend both above inside the centre panel and below, nothing found, I guess I will just have to accept the loose gear selector

if cables tight both ends ,you may just have worn lever pawl /mechanism
