loose bonnet out of nowhere!

Hello,

After many miles of head scratching and stopping in laybyes ive pinpointed the big rattle to the bonnet hinges. The hinge fitted to bonnet is tight and the other half of the hinge fixed to the bulkhead is secure. There is however a huge amount of play where the hinges locate in each other and there is a plastic filler type piece. I recently had the wiper motor, wheel boxes and linkages all changed under warranty at my local stealer but would they have had the bonnet off for this? Is it that the rubber/plastic spacer has rotated?

Its on a 2004 Td5.

Loving the snow just now the white Audi's dont seem to be passing with as much arogance!

Just replace the hinge bushes, they cost pennies and should solve the problem. If not and the bonnet is still secure then just get used to it, it is a land rover after all

the hinge bushes may be rotated with a flat head screwdriver...
might tighten it up.

Is there a correct and incorrect way to locate them?

If for example they were rotated 180 degrees out of position would they be incorreclty fitted? They look to have a groove in them. Shoud this groove face forward, backward, up or down?

They are kind of a rounded U shape with one end open. When the bonnet is lifted vertical the open end should line up with the bonnet hinges so you can lift it off. When you close it they should rotate round so that the open end is closed off near the bottom. Lift the bonnet off, poke the bushes out and give it a bit of a grease and put it back together to see if that makes any difference

mess about,you might find the bonnet has a twist in it and there set up different each side.

So if you open the bonnet with one person either side and lift it right open 90 degrees vertical the whole thing will just lift out of the hinges?

Wow I know understand how they are so easily knicked.

I will do this and see what happens.

At the moment with the bonnet closed the slot in the rubber/plastic bush is facing directly forward. This means there is metal to metal contact with the hinges. I didnt think this would be right but if I was to lift it through 90 degrees to vertical it would be as you say!

Just thinking if lifting the bonnet to vertical allows you to remove it, then you would have ot put it back in the same reverse order way. That then means the slot would be facing forwards?

So my bushes are in the correctly there is just a hell of a lot of play!
