I would have thought a crosser and the rack to carry it, would have been a lot heavier than the tow bar was rated for and even if it was rated upto it, i'd have still been pretty nervous about it.

That prob weighs no more than 150kg. Same weight as 2 average men or 1 rather fat person. My guess is most likely an overestimate if anything. Is that really too much?

Towball download is rated at 145Kg (which is more than many). Due to moment of action that is also defined by the distance behind the mounting points. As this mass is considerably further back than a towball I would agree that it could well be over the limit.

The vast majority of the load applied by a trailer/caravan is in line with the direction of travel and the Freeby is rated at 1800Kg.

The bike itself is well within the load capacity of the vehicle (1/2-3/4 tonne?) but only if it is within the vehicle. I can only assume if the designer has done his job properly that the mounting is more than the standard towball fixings.
 
Just think the weight of a caravan pushing down on it when braking etc. This must put more strain on the tow bar than the x`er?

My parents do a lot of caravaning with a tourer and the average hitch weight should not exceed 75kg, usually my dad likes to drive with about 50kg on the hitch. Most of the weight of the van are on the wheels, and hitch weights are even less on a twin wheeler. Thats why i thought it might have been a bit too heavy. Especially as the weight is not directly over the point of connection to the chassis, and is quite a bit outstretched.

As I said the Freeby has a higher download than most at 145Kg (Disco is 150), 75Kg is common for a car but I agree it looks too much. The best stability with a caravan is achieved when you are close to the rated maximum. Alko hitches on caravans are normally rated at a maximum of 100Kg anyway (normally cast into the side). The vehicle has quite a long overhang anyway so anything further back is going to put on more load.
 
I run one of these racks on my freelander.

No probs, just about on the weight limit.

Handling does alter slightly but not enough to worry me.

This bike (in the pic) is around 120kg at most
