Hi I bought a defender 90 with a Nissan LD28 TD but am looking to change it to a 300 tdi or td5.

What would be my best option?
This is it at the moment.

i think it would be doable to fit a TD5 but there is quite a lot of work required and second hand td5s arent cheap. To fit a 300 youll need to change the engine mounts and maybe the gearbox i would have thought. People have fitted 300s in older defenders

why did you not buy one with a land rover engine of your choice in the first instance and save all the work and expense

Yeah I have looked at the price of them I'm not to worried about that it's if I start to need a lot of other parts...

No the LD28 runs nice sound great as well.
I will be taking a video of it running before it comes out as I will be trying to sell it.

It was local and good condition compared to others that I have seen and I got it for a good price.
I'm not to bothered about having to do some work on it as I have a workshop with a ramp to make it easier anyway.

I would rather sell that engine running though and have something in there that has parts easily available.

you will need quite a few other bits.

throttle pot/pedal
exhaust sensors,
dash/gauges
gearbox (might get away with just a TD5 transponder, if it will fit your box))
ECU
Loom

thats just off the top of my head.

Anything wrong with the LD28?

Everything's wrong with it :) It's in the wrong car for starters :D

Joking apart, I have driven a couple of series vehicles fitted with this engine and hated it. It sounds LURVELY, revs beautifully but show it the shadow of a hill and be prepared to start changing down. It won't react to anything unless given a bootful. Wrong engine to have in a landy.

Yep and that's the reason I want to change it. Have seen a few 300tdi engines for sale so might go for one of them unless I can find out everything I need to td5 it.
