Aherm, I will show you 2 that a 90 makes a good overland vehicle :D

...and mine is much nicer than that thing to.

G

Now is that with the trailer??:)

The main overriding priority of an overland vehicle is mechanical reliability!

Best way (if time permits) is to build/have build your own one as peoples requirements are very different.

That would be one priority, another would the availability of spares/servicability by bush mechanics when you do break down

P.S. a very fully loaded 110 is not very capabable at all, maybe better to use a trailer and spread the load, plus if you want to do some extreme dune driving you can just unhitch the trailer and you have a fully capable vehicle...

Im sure Brenden has a few photo's to prove you wrong!

Trailer testing end of the month. Lightly loaded with about 300kg is all we need as specified previously. The 90 will not be at max payload then either.

G

I guess it depends on your definition of very heavily loaded :D

see 5.24 in this video

Where are you testing your trailer ? A bunch of us are going to be in Wales end of the month ! Do you have any pics of what you have done to the trailer, or is going to be a surprise :D

Going to be around Mid/West Wales the last weekend of Sept.

Not done anything as yet, I dropped it at my folks house a few weeks back. I just want to load it up and take it across some of the most varied terrain in Wales to see how it copes. It pointless spending £££ on it if its not going to do what I want it to do, so I need a weekend of technical driving to decide if its going to work for us.

route not defined yet, but I will pick up the trialer from my folks in Swansea and head across Sarn Helen, Llandovery, Crychan, Rhayader, Devils Bridge, Happy Valley, bomber lane then back down strata florida, brechfa forest and a few unknowns inbetween :)

4 90's and my trailer, keep your eyes peeled

Hmmmm, weight is the enemy of the overland traveller! When we do our main trips we do not use a roof rack. That is multimonth trips as a solo vehicle. 10,000+ miles/trip.

Most people carry far too much kit with them!

Extreme dune driving? 110's not capable? Try some serious dune driving.

Try crossing the Simpson desert in odd conditions such as a heavy sand storm followed by a rain storm. Gives an interesting texture to the sand. Then do it as a solo vehicle knowing that the desert will be closed 2 days after you have entered it. Is that serious/extreme enough for you?

As for the youtube videos????

I think I will stick to our way of travelling.

Brendan

Yes Yes I didn't say a 110 was not capable, I said a "VERY HEAVILY LOADED" 110 was not that capable, and that's not the same thing

Do you have any pics of your 110 ? Very keen to see how it is set up ?

If you want to see how we have set up our red 110 overland vehicle it will be on stand J14 at the LRO show this coming weekend. There is a lot of kit on our red 110 we DO NOT recommend that the average traveller needs Wants, can afford is a different matter.

Basic requirement for an overland vehicle is mechanical reliability! An overland vehicle should fly through an MOT and be capable of doing a 2/3000 miles without incident. Keeping weight down increases reliability as there is less stress.

Some photos can be found HERE and HERE

Take note Booger :D

a gearbox change would be classed as an 'incident'.

:hysterically_laughi

Yes Yes very funny

But is was a recon box put in just before I left, so better prepared I could not have been. The fact that I was able to get a replacement from a drug lord just shows that we have all made a sensible vehicle choice. I'd like to see someone find and collect a land cruiser gearbox in Morocco in one day :D

I would say Land Rovers outnumber Land Rovers in Morocco...most of them I saw were recovery vehicles!) deffo not the case in Algeria or Tunisia though (and I dare say Egypt, where I have not been)

Hi,

This is quite a long thread. But if you're still looking to buy an expedition Land Rover I have one for sale. A 110, 300tdi, with 25,500 miles on the clock and all for £16500. Including many upgrades, spares and expedition equipment.

I bought this Landrover 5 years ago in 2005. It was built in 2001 and spend 3 years at the Landrover factory, then was bought by the previous owners for an Expedition to Antarctica. This was before Topgear drove to the North Pole. Two Defenders were bought, then prepped by Landrover Project Vehicles for the epic trip. The modifications are listed below. The car was flown to Antarctica (one of the only cars ever) and drove around the airport on the ice practising in the snow. Unfortunately the plan to drive to the South Pole was cancelled due to the worst snow on record. As such the expedition was completed on skis and the Landy flew back to the UK. The other one of the two has already down a trip to Cape Town, mine however has done very little!!

I bought it with 2500 genuine miles on the clock. I have kept the car in Switzerland in the alps for 5 years, bring it back each year for MOT and servicing. As such it has in fact only done 25,000 miles now. Such a low mileage 300tdi is rare to find. It is taxed until the end of Dec, and 12 month MOT.

This car would be perfect for any overland trip through africa, any northern exposure trip to colder climes or anything else you care to throw at it. I have never used it off road, and in fact have not really used it properly at all, it was a snow safe station care for me.

Upgrades for the Expedition were:
Upgraded Old Man EMU shocks and springs. Raised travel height and heavy weight use. Goodyear Wranger 265/70 Mud/snow Tyres. (It also has a full set of wheels and tyres Avon Rangemaster originals
for road use) Full Expedition roof rack and ladder.
Webasto Diesel Engine and cabin pre-heater. (Webasto Thermo Top C 5.2kW)
Warn winch 9.5ti and two bags of winching equipment. and extra heavy duty
tow ropes.
Upgraded upgraded towing bumpers, with winch points
Snorkel
Radiator snow/sand cover
Double battery system, and power-cut off switch to Warn winch.
2nd 30 litre fuel tank under
passenger seat, internal switch and linked to fuel gauge. (in addition to the standard 70 litre tank)
Front wing walk-on grips.
UV protection full blacked out windows all round
Microscan MI600 Transponder Immobiliser Thatcham Cat.2 Approved
Alpine CD player with full iPod connectivity and control within the stereo.
Luggage cage.
Tow bar, normal, and alternate spares for farm/industrial tow bar.
Rear door reinforced swinging spare wheel holder.

It comes with some extras also.
Aluminium Sand/snow ladders.
5 Black Fuel/water Jerry Cans.
The original Land rover springs and shocks.
Spare steering damper
Assorted spare parts, fuel filters, windscreen wipers, wiper arms, windscreen wiper motor, brake pad sets for front and rear, 2 fan belts, 4 glow plugs, huge quantity of unused webbing straps and ratchets.

Snow chains for the oversized snow tyres, for all four wheels.
Inflatable car jack for sand/snow use.

I am reluctantly selling the car as I love it!!
It has served me very well, and with such low mileage will continue to serve you well for many more years. You could jump in it today and drive to Africa. Given how expensive the "expedition prepped" cars are by certain specialist dealers this represents something of a bargain. It's twin sister from the expedition was sold recently with 65000km on the clock for £16,000.

You made a comment about wanting a reliable vehicle. I have just driven from Switzerland to London, to Switzerland and back to Lincolnshire in the last month, and it has not skipped a beat.

please get in contact for any further details, photos or assistance. I am open to price discussions. Further photos available on my website below.
