looking to build a 4 x4 is born replica

Hi all, I bought the 4 x 4 is born series from amazon last week, and watched today in one sitting.

Its a seriously nice vehicle thats made, which has a mixture of defender and series 3 bodyparts, a nice v8 engine and a serious lot of suspension traveller.

What its inspired me to do is something very simmilar. However, the program seems to skip out installing the front defender wings and such, so I was wondering how much modifying it would take?

Also, how much fabrication work would I have to do to get a hard top from a series 3 to fit a defender windsheild and series 3 tub, which has been cut down by 15cm to fit the chassis?

Thanks for all the help, I might have more hybrid questions later on, but I am looking foward to buying a range rover classic to start this build... :D

did anyone else actually pay to watch that haynes manual of a tv prog, seeing as it's free to download on those bit torrent sites

ive wathed the program on cable tv and enjoyed it , except for that mark evans who is doing the car ......................what a kn*b he is !!!!!!!!! :rolleyes: .

The trick Bro' is cutting the chassis down to a 100" thats no easy task

I bought it as it was only £13 posted, and I wont get viruses and then arrested by my isp......

Anyway, on the program, Mark uses the chassis off a classic, but doesnt mention cutting it down in any way, bar adding land rover out riggers and a custom rear cross member.

I was wondering though, how it works. I still cant work out how body panels designed for a 90" land rover will need to be chopped down for a 100" chassis? Is it because they are mounted further in perhaps?

How will the front wings and such mount up?

Its got me confused, but I guess alot of this stuff, I can work on when I get the rover.

Also, I cannot weld for the life in me, does anyone have any experience of outsourcing welding to people?

ben, dont go into this on a whim after watching a ****e video, the majority of the conversion work involves welding. i would suggest you buy a welder and teach yourself first, otherwise you might as well just pay someone to build it for you. the front wings are fitted onto the bulkhead. its advisable to weld a couple of brackets on the front end to support them. you will alsi need to weld brackets to hold the tub to the chassis. if you go for it then good luck, but from reading your questions i personally dont think you are qualified enough to carry out the job(no offence meant).
 
none taken mate, I know what you mean.

I think I'll invest in a mig welder then (or do I need tig, is that for aluminium?) and a good dvd / book on welding first.
