Cheers, will have a look, got a few issues of LRO sat around here and got a subscription for my birthday so will be able to go through them, didnt think to look in there :S

300tdi are cheap now 200tdi are getting old and unless they have been garaged or had loads of cash spent on them it may be a rust bucket although i have seen alot of 300 tdi's which were real dogs just watch for rust and make sure the tranny works in all gears and the diff light comes on and take your time looking, 300tdi the most fun car i have owned luv it to bits, just dont tell the missus almost forgot i would personally buy private as you will get alot more landy for your money:D

will keep my eyes open for a 300 then :) - am happy enough playing with spanners but I cant weld so dont want too much rust :)

is auto or manual a better choice? - I have never driven an auto before but I understand they are more thirsty?

And are there any good lanes in South Wales? (got to ask since you are in Cardiff :) )

i have an auto buy choice because its my main car and i am ****ed off with city driving with a manual and i drive it to scotland and back the mpg thing is not as bad as some people say but i would test drive one first as some people cant take to them, i drive for a living and prefer the auto box but it is as good off road as the manual and yes there are some good greenlanes in south wales if you want some info contact richie everson he is the founder member of the south wales land rover club edwin is also very helpful here is the web address South Wales Land Rover Club | OFFICIAL WEB SITE

Cheers for that link, have registered on their forum but it seems quite quiet on there for some reason

Will have to try both but I think I will end up going for a manual, otherwise my laft foot may get bored :D

If like me you are not up to welding, please do look VERY carefully as Discos are, without doubt, prone to rust.

We have two, a Tdi 200 manual and a Tdi300 auto. So, as to the question of auto versus manual; like most things in life - it depends!!

If you spend lots of time in towns in traffic, the auto makes life easier. However they ARE slower off the mark, once up to speed they're about same.

The manual will be slightly more economical than the auto, depending on how they're both driven. I find the auto, in particular, benefits from sympathic driving at lower speeds. Once up to 52mph, the Torque converter locks up so then it runs like a manual, in terms of fuel efficiency.

Whether it's manual or auto, the key to a happy Disco life is finding an example which is rust free (??!!) and with a good, documented service history.

I bought one last December, '98 Disco Tdi 300 auto, 77,000 miles and I'm delighted with it. Almost no rust and an excellent service history.

Hope this helps,
Dave
