Basically just looking for some advice on buying a used defender from stratstone bury its a 60 plate SX model for just shy of 22k with about 31k on the clock.

Would I be better to wait a few months and buy privately? Am I paying over and above by buying from a franchised dealer? Have read a few reviews online for stratstone and they seem pretty naff.

Link here: http://www.stratstone.com/VehicleSearch/Used/land-rover-used-car-NX60FTO.html?qs=False&type=1

with my car as part ex it works out at around 17500, two things noticed when I had a test drive yesterday the rear passenger side seat was soaking wet and they struggled to get it running for the test drive, although once running it was ace.

You might be hard pushed to get info for a 60 plate on this forum, most of us run vehicles anything from 10 to 30 years old, a 60 plate is probably out of our league (well, most of us). However, I would be inclined to turn up unannounced and ask them to start it, if it won't start then walk away. If it was just the leaking roof I would insist it was fixed before you would consider an offer on it. Before you get a load of grief go to the 'intro' section and introduce yourself ;)

£22k for a 4 year old 90?
They're having a fookin giraffe.

I sold my 3 year old 110XS with 27,000 miles for £18500 and I thought that was a bloody good price.

Stratstone are ****ers too.

It doesn't matter what age a car is. You'll always pay over the odds from any dealer. Stratstones are probably the most expensive and least helpful when things go wrong.

I'd be inclined to go else where If they can't even get a vehicle ready for a test drive Then do you really want to give them £22k of your money??

Cheers for the responses, pretty much said what I had at the back of my mind, its took me about 6 months of looking before I have had a test drive so I'm sure I can wait a
while longer.

Nigel, thanks for the heads up on that, sorry for not introducing myself to the forum!

I expect to pay a premium by going to a main dealer but from what Trewey said looks like they're taking the p*ss with the price.

Pikey, thanks for the reply pretty much confirmed what I read online albeit the reviews where mainly for RR's and jags.

If your spending that sort of money I would be inclined to look further a field on your search for a motor. Can be some bargains had in some parts of the country compared to others on second hand. Dealers normally have more give in the price just before financial year for targets etc etc. I am not sure if this will apply to 2nd hand though.

Realistically I wanted to spend less than 17k but not really sure If thats a realistic budget to get myself into a 90 XS 'fender; for the right one I'd happily travel for it.

Guessing your from the bury area, if you want to stick with a dealer give Hillendale a call. If you know what you want they will look out for one on the network.
I've been nothing but impressed with the service from them, can't say the cars been perfect but they bend over backward to help, the MD is a down to earth young chap that seems to have a decent grip of reality.

Wack61 that's very nice but definitely over my budget :( realistically wanted to spend under 17500 the dealer made what I thought was a good offer with my car (focus titanium 2011 15k miles) as part ex but from what I read online about Stratstone and from the responses I got from here I've changed my mind on that!

accywingy cheers for that I will be sure to, I'm actually from closer to Warrington/Wigan but travel to my partners dads in Glossop regularly passing bury, its the only land rover dealership I know of in the area other than Manchester.
